Monk: What's it take to catch an episode?!?!

If and when I get a full-time job, one in which I excel, and one in which I have at least some job security, I'll be laying out lots o' cash for all the goodies. Unfortunately, I've been unemployed for twelve out of the last twenty months, and my prospects aren't good. (I hate commuting. I mean, I hate commuting. If people would stop rear-ending me, I probably wouldn't mind driving into those crime-infested big cities...)

Okay, this is getting damn ridiculous. I checked and checked and triple-checked, and Monk was listed as being on at midnight Friday/Saturday the 12th/13th.

And what's on? Law & Order: SVU. Again. The third showing of this episode this week, that I know of.

Sheesh...

I managed to catch about 15 minutes of it when I came upon it during the 10pm showing. I like Monk. I want to watch Monk. But the aggravation just isn't worth it...

C'mon, they've got to get the schedule right some day...

OK my interest has just been tweeked, What is this new "Monk" show about and who's in it and when can we expect to see it in the UK. Does it have any cool effects ? Like a Quivering Palm through about 20 Bad Guys...hehehe !!! Are Monks Kicking Butt every episode? etc...or is it about some dude called "Monk"....Bummer !!! [sigh]

Stop, stop, stop...

Monk is like Columbo because he knows who the criminal is from early on in the episode. It's a matter of finding the evidence to convict the guy.

However, it's not about the mystery. That's not the charm of Monk. The charm is watching a total neurotic (Monk) trying unsuccessfully to put aside his neuroses, working on the case.

For instance, one time (from a commercial I saw) he was willing to give up a case because to proceed would involve talking to a naked man.

Or in Mexico (another episode I missed, dang it, except for the end), he's so terrified of the water that his dehydration is interfering with his search.

And so on. Think more Felix Unger (the Odd Couple) meets Columbo. A brilliant guy who just happens to be about 12 cards short of a full deck.

Add in his nurse/assistant Sharona, his former boss from the police who still likes him, the young detective in the police who wants to one-up him, and so on.

It's a matter of personalities, not mysteries.

Of course, this is coming from someone who has only managed to see two episodes out of four or five so far.

6 years ago, Brilliant San Francisco Police Detective Adrian Monk was traumatized when his wife, Trudy Ann Monk, a newspaper journalist, was killed by a car bomb while working on a story. The event triggered his already eccentric behavior into full-blown obsessive-complusive neurosis. (They have said the name of his disorder on the show, but I cannot remember it.)

He runs his own consultation business through Sherona, his personal nurse, who has cared for him for the past six years. Only recently has he returned to a semblance of stability, enough to venture outside.

So we have a detective who must sanitize his hands every time he greets someone, who must touch every parking meter down a city block and avoid pavement cracks...

...but who has a mind like a steel trap, and catches the most esoteric clues, to solve crimes where the criminal has an air-tight alibi. Above it all, he is devoted to his late wife, and now, though he has a hard time admitting it, to Sherona.

I cannot do it justice, but the show is fun and entertaining, and well worth watching. The interplay of the characters is hilarious, and watching him work through his traumas to solve crimes is done in a funny way, without being insulting.

Monk's origin timeslot is at 10:00 pm on Friday nights, without fail. Our USA vendor in South Carolina has not yet skipped a 10:00 pm timeslot, and hopoefully yours won't.

How many more weeks before the new season starts? Maybe they'll be able to pack more episodes in by then...

I know one thing, nothing will be more important for me to tape than Monk. That's what happened last week, when I wanted to tape both Monk and another show, and saw that Yahoo had Monk listed at both 10pm and midnight. Wrong! Monk wasn't on at midnight, Law & Order: SVU was...

Heck, I may even watch the show during the week (instead of waiting for my couch potato fest on the weekend), in addition to taping it...

No, but I have a DVR (like TiVo but cheaper). I will look for Monk and hit "record every episode" for you. Then, I just copy the DVR to VHS. Simple! The nice thing about "record every episode" is just the sheer # of eps that get recorded--it seems that cable channels air their shows about 5-7 times a week, but sometimes that is at 3 in the morning....
