A few of the monsters in Echohawk's ENCyclopedia have variants that aren't currently in the Creature Catalog, so I fancy converting them.

Firstly, as I mentioned in the Lamia thread, we don't have a CC conversion for the Sa'ir.

Secondly, I spent a large chunk of Sunday comparing the various Kraken and Giant Squid entries, and we are missing four variant Krakens:
  1. In original OD&D, the Kraken is the monster in A Merritt's Dwellers in the Mirage, not the sea monster.
  2. In BECMI, Kraken are quite different from the AD&D/3E+ version, so I fancy statting it as a "Mystaran Kraken".
  3. In AD&D's Birthright setting, The Kraken is an awnshegh in Blood Enemies (1995)
  4. Birthright also has an Undead Kraken in Legacy of the Hero-Kings (1996)

So does anyone have any preferences which of the above to convert first? If no one objects, I'm inclined to just go through them in the order they're presented in - so it'd be the Sa'ir first.

Oh, and it's worth mentioning that in Mystara a Catoblepas is called a "Nekrozon" and has immunity to energy drain and death effects, but I don't feel that's enough of a difference to merit a new CC entry, especially as the Catoblepas was given official 3E stats in Monster Manual III.

I'll agree with all that, but let's leave this thread for Echohawk to post updates and put the Sa'ir and various Krakens in the appropriate other places.

That's what I was planning. It's better to leave this thread for the ENCyclopedia updates.

For the conversions, I was thinking:

The Sa'ir will be in Converting monsters from Dragon magazine.

The "Hyborian" Kraken and Mystaran Kraken will be in Converting original D&D and Mystara monsters.

The Awnshegh Kraken and Undead Kraken from the Birthright Setting will be in Converting Creatures from Other Campaign Settings.

Hopefully I'll have time to start the Sa'ir conversion once I finish work today.

I'll update this post with links to the Working Drafts of the creatures as we start them - assuming I can remember to do it!

EDIT: Started Sa'ir Working Draft.

Hi. I wanted to congratulate you for this fantastic work. "Monster ENCyclopedia" is a true pearl for every D&D player. The funny thing is that every time I wanted to insert a monster in one of my adventures, I discovered that you had made an article about it. I want a Drider in a Drow-adventure? BOOM. I find this encycl... ops, ENCyclopedia and an article about driders. I am making an adventure based on lamias? BOOM. I discover that you have made a "page" about lamias, too. (Practically, I'm only waiting for the xorn! XD ) So, thank you so much!!!

Now, I know that to ask you to do a specific monster can be a little disrespectful since all the work you do, but... please... for the S-letter... you should do the SPANNEEERRR!!!!! OMG NO ONE UNDERSTANDS THAT IS A FUC***G BRIDGE THAT WALKS AND RECOGNIZABLE ONLY BY DWARVES!!! I LOVE SPANNERS, SPANNERS ARE MY LIFE!!! SPANNEEEEERRRSSS!!!1!1!!1!!! (So, please, do the Spanner)

OK, joking aside, thanks for this encyclopedia. I'll always be grateful for your work (also if you will never do the Spanner XD ).

Thanks for the feedback, but unfortunately the monster I've picked for S isn't the spanner. As far as I can tell, the spanner has only appeared in print twice, both for 2nd Edition, so there's not a lot of material to work with there. I could see it popping up in a "One Hit Wonders" edition of the ENCyclopedia, but probably not in an entry by itself. Sorry!

When is the next entry? It's been a few months!
I'm not sure. These articles share space with my gaming time, so when I'm actually playing D&D (like now), I'm spending much less time writing. S is about 80% done, but still needs a few more hours to finish.

Another great thread Echohawk, I am always looking for the iconographic background and the "historical" line behind DnD, in particular of the bestiary. I'm just thrilled waiting the official presentation of the documentary film "Eye of The Beholder"....

S is for...

Seriously, these articles are the best posts on EnWorld in the last 10 years. I know they must consume an enormous amount of your time, but just wanting to let you know... still looking forward to the next one.
