Hello!

First off, thanks for the lists, folks!

Secondly - whoo-hoo, Arcanodaem- er, Arcanaloths are back! I always thought of them as the real powers among the daemons/yugoloths, and seeing the weak stats for the ultroloths in the 3e Manual of the Planes has only reinforced this perception with me. As a side note, on the matter of the 'loths, the thing that made them unique in 1e was their scaled magic resistance - they resisted low-level spells better than high-level ones. Given that 3e restored the ability of higher-level casters to overcome spell resistance better, I'm drawn to wonder why the 'loth's unique ability wasn't restored too. Perhaps they figured the uniqueness wasn't worth the extra math...

Thirdly, the modules X4, X5, and X10 were brought up recently in the thread on classic villains. Does anyone know whether the Juggernauts in the MM2 are conversions of the OD&D Juggernauts that first appeared in those modules, or whether they are made up anew from whole cloth?

And fourthly...

I bandied about with calling it "Gargantua" and "Gargantuan" -- but that made the templated creature sound like some 1950s B-movie. I went with Titanic because it just sounded better to the ear...

Hey, "Gargantua" has some solid D&D roots to it. There was actually a Gargantuan template in BD&D, with the same apparent goal as this Titanic one - to convert ordinary monsters into giant freakish mutant challenges. And the Gargantuas in 1e Oriental Adventures WERE B-movie monsters - they were a blatant nod to Godzilla, Mothra, and similar Toei classics. :)

Also, they were supposedly creations of the wizard aptly named... Gargantua.

My big questions (as the book isn't here yet) is if Sylph gets an ECL, and what is their type? Are they Fey or Elemental (like 2E MM)?

Thanks!
Chris

Sylphs do not get an ECL. They are Small Outsiders (Air) with 3 HD and an advancement range of 4-9 HD. Incidentally, I think the illustration accompanying the sylph entry looks like a 1920s-era flapper more than anything else (okay, a flapper with dragonfly wings).

I must admit that I am a bit surprised that you weren't told "Read the CC and avoid creating monsters that might be too similar.". This might have reduced the possible confusion.

If you want to avoid infringing on someone else's property, the last thing you do is have your designer even look at it. The editor or someone in a quality assurance position should be familiar with such material, however.

That said, the resemblance between the undead ooze and the bone ooze is superficial. They are both are oozes that contain bones, but the core concept of the undead ooze is that it also aquires the basic properties of an undead by its contact with tainted material. The bone ooze is simply a scavenger which consumes bones, and has no undead-like properties.

<starts tossing stuff about> NOoOOOOooOoo!! That's the one I really WANTED to have an ECL! Ahhh!! This is all Richards' fault! Richards....! <dragged off stage, and hopes someone gets the reference>

Ah well... Guess we'll have to figure out an ECL...
