Monster Manual 2 Survey

Thanks, I gave them my input.
So have I.

It's an extremely minor point, but I wonder why they keep lumping OD&D, BD&D and AD&D 1e in their polls, while 2e is considered a whole different beast. I realize that that's not the point of the poll, but still it has made me curious ever since I first saw this in a WotC survey...

Overall a good poll. Focused on MM2, or actually MM3 I strongly suspect.

I liked MM2 a lot and I hope MM3 is the same. I intend to buy MM3 also, but probably not any further ones after Dark Sun.

Purely a guess, but perhaps not to confuse the uninformed. You see edition numbers, you expect them to go from 1 to whatever (with possible decimal numbers in between). You start tossing in OD&D and BD&D and AD&D and you'll have people who never heard of the edition history going "I have no idea, should I check it or not?" or "wow this is getting more technical than i know about" - and if someone is too confused by an early question there is an increased chance they may not finish the poll. Again, this is all just a guess.

personally, i like minimal fluff (for inspiration) but I end up reskinning 75% of creatures to keep things fresh (with a hint of flavor from the original fluff).

From their perspective, the editions could probably be titled "old", "venerable", "ancient" with no regard to their actual content - I think they just want to know how much of a grognard you are. In this view, there is an event horizon at 1ed - beyond that point, they just don't care any more.

I also suspect the current WotC generation started with either 1ed or 2ed and really don't know the difference between the older games - not many people do.

I agree that they don't really care about distinguishing among "grognards", but I'm fairly certain that a lot of the folks at WotC (at least among designers and developers) do know quite a bit about the history of D&D. Bill Slavicsek and Chris Perkins have been around for quite awhile and Mike Mearls had an OD&D campaign going in the recent past, just to make a few examples.
