[Monster Manual I] I've only just realized...

So maybe I'm late to the party, and other people have already noted this...

But I've only just realized that the artwork for the devourer (giant undead monstrosity with the little guy in his chest) is pretty obviously inspired, at least in part, by the statues in Outworld in the Mortal Kombat movie.

(And yes, this means I was recently watching the MK movie. :heh: What can I say? It's cheesy, with bad writing and bad acting, but every now and again I get the yen for silly, over-the-top action.)

I recall that resemblance. Those statues at the right scale would make cool minis for devourers, much better than the MM artwork. At least the Brom artwork, depicted on the right, for the devourer ruled.

Another good piece of art for them, if you want a pseudonatural devourer, would be a M:tG Delraich

Whatchutalkinbout mouse? MK was an awesome videogame movie. MK2 sucked foul though.

These statements are not mutually exclusive. :p

I'll have to make a devourer swordsage now, with the Finishing Move manoeuvre. :p
No one has to make a devourer swordsage, it's a choice you're making. ;)

I kind of enjoyed MK. Watching Raiden, the chinese god of thunder, cackle at his own jokes, stop, appear self-conscious and then apologize for doing so was quite amusing as I recall. I also found the techno-dance theme song they played during each combat sequence funny; especially the voice-over in which you hear somebody yelling out "MORTAL COMBAT!!!". I remember hoping each time it happened that the main characters would look around confusedly, wondering who had yelled that out and where they were. :p

The devourer originally appeared in the Planescape Monstrous Compendium Appendix III, incidentally, not the Monster Manual. It could still have been inspired by Mortal Kombat, of course.

I got two words for you:

Talisa.

Soto.

Actually, my first thought on seeing the devourer in the MM was of MK.

I'm both disturbed and intrigued by the idea of a devourer swordsage, though.
