Monster Manual Update: Kuo-Toa and Sahuagin

Aye, next setting will likely be next August (per the GenCon announcement).

That said, I did like seeing these critters get an update. I haven't read the sahaugin yet since they were heroic tier and I had to go to work, but the kuo-toa entry was nice. As it so happens, my players will likely be heading into the Underdark soon, so they might see some play now. :)

Logan did an incredible job on this. The changes, as someone noted, are more than just statistical updates. There is a slew of backstory and content, something largely missing from the earlier monster entries.

Does anyone else think that the focus on these 2 monsters in the update is gearing towards some kind of corebook / campaign release?

Yes fishy monsters are cool but why the update?

There was one back in June that was Wights and Ghosts.

I think it's just a matter of doing only two types at a time, and you might as well do thematically similar types when you do it.

Otherwise we'd be here asking "Wights and Kuo-Toa? How the heck are they related?".

The July one was called Aberrations, and updated Gibbering Beasts, Chuuls, and Grells.

And they definitely changed the Grells ridiculous stun power. They still have it, but it's much harder for them to maintain so it doesn't get handed out like candy on Halloween.

I love these articles.

Which makes all the difference! I LOVE reading the monster stories!

I am very glad to have ideas to hang encounters from that aren't "This things hates you and also might eat you. RAWR. ROLL INITIATIVE." Though a lot of these classic beasties are already stepped in that, making it a bit less...useful? No less interesting and awesome, though, and new DMs still need this stuff.

I'm glad they're keeping a lot of the old lore, too.

The mechanics updates are largely transparent to me (though I'm glad they're getting done!), but the story updates are valuable material. I really hope they don't ever go back to the "encyclopedia of raw stats and bear lore" model they employed for the first few MM's.
