Monte Cook Games & Free League Lead The TTRPG Crowdfunding Charts!

Who has raised the most via crowdfunding... ever?

Unlike the Million Dollar Kickstarter Club which lists individual TTRPG campaigns which have broken the $1M mark, this list compiles the total raised by crowdfunding by each creator.

These are all the creators I could find which had a TTRPG Kickstarter or Backerkit and had totalled over $2M in crowdfunding. I've noted the total number of campaigns and also the number which were TTRPG -- so 12 (7) means that they have 12 crowdfunding campaigns, 7 of which were for a TTRPG. This is just Kickstarter and Backerkit; I am aware that several other platforms exist.

I cut it off at $2M as the number of entries grows rapidly below that. As it is there are approaching 600 crowdfunding campaigns represented in the table below.

Somewhat arbitrarily I have highlighted the ones which have 50% or more of their crowdfunders in TTRPGS (as opposed to boardgames and other tabletop games). This creates a TTRPG-specific list as follows:
  1. Monte Cook Games
  2. Free League
  3. Magpie Games
  4. Hit Point Press
  5. Richard Thomas
  6. Kobold Press
  7. Matt Colville
  8. Exalted Funeral
  9. Shane Hensley
  10. Goodman Games
  11. Ghostfire Gaming
  12. DnD Shorts
  13. Modiphius
  14. Morrus
  15. Jim Searcy
  16. Loot Tavern
  17. MonkeyDM
  18. Eldermancy
  19. Nord Games
  20. Dungeon Dudes

who keeps buying steamedforged games?
Steamforged is a board game company which happens to have released one TTRPG product. It only ‘technically’ qualifies for the list as it’s really not a TTRPG company.

With their track record on "Quality" releases, vs IP grabs, you would think people would realize.
I don't know what that means.

yes, yes, everyone throw tomatoes at me now and get it over with)
A regular tomato or something straight out of the Killer Tomatoes movie? 😋 ;)

but I really wish that Palladium goes bankrupt hard and that Kevin Siembieda is forced to sell ALL the Palladium IPs, someone buys them and makes 5e (D&D) versions of them.
Which piece of Palladium IP would like you to see in 5e? curious Given the number of anthropomorphic animal races that have appeared in D&D over the years, I would choose TMNT and Other Strangeness for 5e. ;)

I really hope that doesn't happen.
Trying to force everything into one design paradigm is bad forthe industry. We know this from experience -- d20, anyone? There are some things that I think 5E would work fine for (Star Wars for example, IMO) but generally I prefer if games go with bespoke systems. Palladium rules are a mess, for sure, but going 5E isn't the only way to save them. Savage Worlds Rifts shows that, if nothing else.

TMNT isn't a Palladium IP, so that's out. I don't know if I would play or even read that 5e (D&D) version, but it would hit Kevin right in the gonads. He's been historically very resistant against (fan) conversion of his games. Many a C&D has been sent in that cause and quite a few suing attempts have been made. It would be like leaving some bodily processed water on that Palladium grave... ;)

It does seem he's mellowed some... Savage Worlds Rifts is an example of that, but that might just have been a survival necessity...

I'm just a bit vicious regarding the fate of P/KS at this point... :devilish:

@Reynard I agree that all games shouldn't fit the one size fits all straight jacket that is 5e (D&D), but that was not the point of the wish... ;) Savage Worlds might be a perfect fit for Rifts, but what about Paladium Fantasy?

If WotC wanted a crownfunding project they would use Hasbro Pulse. For example? The updated version but with the look of the 1989 Ed, with a vintage/retro style. Some new pictures could be the sketeches by AI but retouched after by human artists.

Cool chart. I got two out of three in the other thread when I said 'I like to think Free League, Modiphius and Monte are co-leaders'.

I thought Modiphius would have been higher. Are all their RPGs launched via KS or do they do direct launch sales from their website, without a KS?

It's actually relatively rare for them, I think. They KSed Conan and John Carter, but I don't think STA, Fallout or Dune were KSed. I don't remember if Dishonoured was.
