moral dilemmas

I used the hell out of moral dilemmas in my Arcana Evolved campaign. Having no alignments makes moral challenges easier, IMHO.

My favorite was when the party was looking for a specific artifact - the hammer of a dead god - which they needed in order to destroy another, very powerful, evil artifact. They got clues as to its location, found the forgotten temple.... and it turns out that a new religion had formed up around it.

This was a fairly inoffensive cult of the Builder, devoted to creating rather than to destroying. They needed this hammer daily, as it was the center of their worship - as such, they were unwilling to loan it to the party. What's more, their religious focus was on building rather than destroying... Destroying a created item, no matter how wicked, was anathema.

They ended up stealing the hammer. In the process, they were pursued by the Oathbound who had sworn to protect the hammer. It was a really cool jaunt. :)

I also plan to make moral dilemmas like this the centerpiece of an upcoming Star Wars Saga Edition game, set in the Dark Times. It's basically a Star Wars/Dirty Dozen mashup, with the PCs all playing convicted criminals, sentenced to death.
