Morpheus and DnD

excuses excuses... you are still stealing.

i know the temptation is terrible... i did napster... i said to myself "hey, i can't find these records anymore, they're out of print..." but then i soon found myself downloading anything i wanted to listen to.

i'm not saying you should feel bad, just admit to yourself you are a thief...
Do you consider it a theft when you try a car before buying it? Do you consider it a theft when you hear a song on the radio before buying the CD? As I said, I've already preordered D&Dg and the ELH. If I can find it (illegally, I admit that), the only thing it will change is that I'll be able to read the book before I'd normally be able. I disapprove as much as you do the fact that people steal books from companies. But I won't admit I'm a thief unless I'm one.

typical case of an inappropriate comparison. here's a better one: you go to dan's automart and steal one of his cars. you take it for a joy ride then a) you decide you like it and drive it back to the automart where you pay dan for the car... however you still get arrested by the police; or b) decide you don't like the car and abandon it by the side of the road.

like i said before, i'm not saying you should be ashamed of yourself but be honest with yourself. you ARE a thief, regardless of what you think. do i think it is reasonable to try out products before buying them? perhaps. but our personal opinions have nothing to do with the rights of the people who produce the products you want.

You had the owner's permission. ("Fair Use.")

The Radio Station had the owner's permission. ("Fair Use.")

Does this also apply to Masters of the Wild, or Monte's d20 Call of Cthulhu? Here, you DON'T have the owner's permission.

I disapprove as much as you do the fact that people steal books from companies. But I won't admit I'm a thief unless I'm one.

By the legal standards of the copyright holders, downloading their material without permission IS theft.

Not being insulting, just offering an observation....

I think trading these programs on EN World is completely inappropriate...

You are basically saying "I don't condone drug use but here's a crack pipe..."

MODERATOR!!

Please get rid of this stuff!

I think we need some sort of official position on this stuff...

I honestly don't understand where people get these self-righteous POV about their copyright infringement. What planet are you people on?
There is a huge amount of self-delusion going on about your own actions. Do you think the world owes you this stuff??

If you want to steal, fine. I do not care. I am just baffled by people trying to justify what they are doing.

Thieves, repeat after me:

"I am downloading this stuff in violation of international copyright laws because
a) i don't think the laws are just
b) i don't think my action has any consequences
c) i don't care what the consequences of my actions are"

It all comes down to the fact that you want the stuff and you don't want to pay for it.

Feel free to discuss the issues -- as long as you can do it civilly.

Feel free to link to *legal* software.

Absolutely do not link to pirated material on our boards.

My opinion: There's no doubt that the way we treat "information" today is a lot different than say 10 years ago, due to the ease of transfer via the Internet. I can understand the lure of "free stuff." However... the people who baffle me are the ones who go through the hassle of PDFing something in the first place and put it in their "share" folder. That isn't just typical human laziness or covetousness. That's, like, going out of your way to create a supply of illegal copies for others. If you nab something from someone else, at LEAST don't put it somewhere where it can get spread out more...

It's not that difficult to find a p2p trading program, for whatever use. If I started a [OT] Kazaa? Thread and asked what the best p2p programs are, I doubt that would be shut down. Besides, one can just go to CNETs www.download.com and search in the p2p category, or music download cateogry for mp3s, whatever.

BTW, Morrus already stated (or someone who spoke for him) that he will delete links to illegal pdfs and sites. I read that something like a few months ago ... ?

Finally, although this is bad, if he did state he preordered it already, and only did it for advance books he can't buy yet but preordered, I dont see why thats a problem.
