Morrus Goes Boating in Oxford

- A building built in 1060 makes my mind twitch. That was 432 years before my continent was even discovered. Good god.

I lived in France for five years, and our house was a renovated 12th century farmhouse. The walls were three feet thick in places.

Sorry to be pedantic, but there were native people here on our continent way before that, who built some impressive structures in their own right.

Gosh, did I say there weren't?

But you never know, I could be living in ignorance and frolicking in the blissful detrius of a biased education. Or maybe I'm incredibly enlightened and my statement was shorthand for "discovered by imperialistic white Europeans who then proceded to commandeer the land from the native settlers." Or perhaps - just perhaps - I thought that the date 1492 was being obviously used as a time-based marker, and I didn't feel the need to be more explicit because I was trying to make a particular point about our two continents' relative periods of recorded history.

Seriously, I'm sure you meant well in your comment, but please don't read more into it than was meant, okay? :p

Morrus - incredibly cool photos and trip. I'm jealous!

Hmmm.....

All kinds of neat really really old buildings
amazing landscapes
all kinds of history
AND great beer?
FYI Oxford has more pubs per square mile than anywhere else in the UK! :)

It also has a well-stocked FLGS (i.e. the Games Keeper on the Cowley Road).

BTW I can think of a good reason for not moving to England: it's painfully expensive especially in the SE. I just came back from a trip to Chicago and I couldn't believe how cheap everything was there.

Folks, I really don't want to close my own thread. I started it because I thought some people might find it interesting, and because I wanted to share the fun that I had with you all. I would really rather not see that turned into an excuse for people to start arguing and sniping at each other - there's no "competition" here, it's just me sharing the details of a fun weekend.

Thanks, all.

Morrus--

Looks like a great trip. I used to live a few blocks from St. Michael's. Oxford's a great place.

Next time you're in town, check out Chutney's (if they're still in business), it's a fantastic little Indian place at the end of St. Michael's St. It's across from the GW store.

I apologize for being snarky regarding the old "America being discovered" thing. :D

Hey! When's the last time an admin actually got a thread closed?!?

No, Nuffield. More serious and less fun (unfortunately). ;)

Christ Church, OTOH, I found to be completely unserious, if not for that reason fun. :D

BTW, Morrus... unless I'm mistaken or you pursued some odd watersport involving rudders rather than the customary 10-ft. pole, the correct term for "boating" would be "punting." ;)

It didn't involve either - rather, it involved two oars. Rowing, I guess.
