Most impressive young people acting these days?

Maybe some of these talented young actors and actresses are actually unique enough to not just be "the new ...". :)

Bye
Thanee

That's up to them, of course. Until then, it's just a convenient shorthand for the type of career one might expect them to potentially mirror. :)

Julliette Lewis does a lot of unusual roles.

(She could be the a new Thanee!) ;)

Not sure if he qualifies anymore but Matt Damon. I can't really think of too many of his movies, besides Stuck on You, that I didn't like.
You might add Brothers Grimm to your "hate it" list. Then again, it could be Matt's first comedy film he's good at. :D

Christina Ricci is probably the most understated young actress. She's not much of a red-carpet celebrity type, but she is good in every role she performed.

Smallville has been hit and miss, but when Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum are good, they're very good. Welling especially has grown leaps and bounds in his acting ability. Why Warner Bros isn't demanding that he star in the big-screen Superman film is beyond me.

Should Zach move from TV to film full-time?
He's got two more years of Scrubs left on his contract. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he makes the leap then, especially if Garden State picks up some awards like critics are saying it might.

Of course, he did Garden State during a series hiatus, and a lot of TV actors enjoy doing that. You get the best of both worlds that way: a steady TV paycheck and the ability to do any movie project you feel like in the off-season.
