Most Missed Defunct Gaming Magazines?

and yes, even Hero's much abused Adventurer's Club (though their webzine, Digital Hero, is damn good).
And White Dwarf as it was back in Ye Olden Days.

When Allston was running Adventurer's Club it was part of the Holy Trinity of game magazines (Dragon back when it had adventures, White Dwarf and AC).

The only really good gaming magazine now that some f***ing accountant decided they could sell 18 more Dungeon subs a year without Poly is SJG's Pyramid.

Most of those listed in the initial post.

Let's not forget the magazine of Adventurers.

How about Australian Realms? More good stuff there.

But man, I really miss Arcane and Shadis. I was just reading some Shadis the other day with it's GM Workshops... good stuff still.

Most Missed gaming mags

In order:

1. The Familiar (seriously, am I the only one who remembers it?)
2. Earthdawn Journal
3. Shadis
4. Pre-Inphobia White Wolf

The Dwarf

The old White Dwarf was great, especially Dave Langford's acrebic book reviews. His savaging of L Ron Hubbard is one of may favourite reads ever.

Plus I had an article in it once (Issue 99, Martial Arts for RuneQuest :o)

I also miss Imagine magazine. It tended to be a lot more fluff than crunch (although we didn't use such terms in them days... ;) ) and it was printed on disturbing glossy paper, but it had articles that could make you think in different ways.

Arcane (or was it arcane) was just slightly too much on the side of style over substance for my liking, plus it was discontinued halfway through my subscription so the publishers started sending me SFX instead. I can never forgive it for that reason.

When I was moving a few weeks ago I ran into my seldom looked at box of Gaming magazines, and it was sad how many have gone the way of all things flesh.

Ones in particular I find myself missing:
White Dwarf _ I realize that there is still a magazine by that name, but the old issues where they covered everyone's games was a completely different beast.
Dungeoneer's Journal - the magazine by Judges Guild way back when.

What other magazines do people remember fondly?

The Auld Grump
Really miss those two, my favourite Dungeoneers were the preJG issues in A5 format. Apart from them does anyone else remember the British mags from the late 70s/early 80s, especially Underword Oracle, News from Bree, and [Troll Crusher?

Particularly memorable were the Halls of testing in the Underworld Oracle - addys for a GM and one player

You missed the greatest mag of all time....Stardate
That was one of my favorites too, although its utility for me lessened toward the end as it started shifting focus from Star Trek to Battletech. Back in the '80's, FASA's Star Trek RPG was my favorite RPG, even beating out D&D. I'd also like to note that the magazine changed its name to Stardrive for its last few issues before it died.

Here's another old defunct favorite of mine from the '80's that noone has mentioned. I'm curious if anyone else here can identify it....

Old Magazines

I don't know if I miss any, I have about: three boxes of Dragons in various states of disrepair from 47 to 250 sitting in my closet and the CD-ROM magazine archive, and scattered issues from 251-275 and everyone after that point; I have one issue of Space Gamer which isn't all that good; I have some magazines whose name is something like the Adventure's Guild or something like that (don't remember); about 20+ Old School Polyhedrons and all but one of the Dung/Poly mixes (which a friend lost and won't admit to losing); I have four White Wolf Magazines (Issue 9 where Spell Prefixes were introduced and which predate Metamagic feats by a decade, and the World of Future Darkness series); the last four Inphobias (Mostly for the Kult Crossover, though there is the classic and funny "So You Wanna Be a Vampire" article); Around 5 or so old school Dungeons. The Darktime issue of Interface Magazine; One Mecha Press (which is great, I want more); And about 10 or so Battletechnologies.

Mostly I go on line, find indicies for articles I want and then cast around my favorite online stores until I find the magazine that contains that article. The internet is great for that.
