Most Missed Defunct Gaming Magazines?

Hooray for Scrollworks! But then again, I'm biased. I published it. ;) I miss that little rag. I really do...

Scrollworks was awesome. It's utilty was fine, but its sense of humor and its heart were it's strong points to me.

White Dwarf back when they were doing D&D stuff (and articles for Runequest!).

That was easily my favorite gaming magazine ever.

First ninja class for D&D pre-first edition Oriental Adventures? Check.

Solo adventure for a ninja, including a beautiful map of the castle the ninja was to infiltrate? Check.

Houri class for 1E AD&D? Check.

Adventure where the PCs get shrunk down and have to fight their way out of a hive rule by intelligent bee-like humanoids? Check.

Ahead of its time, better than all the magazines that have tried to follow in its footsteps, cue the music.

Battletechnology,

The best single game dedicated 'zine ever produced!. Most of the alternate rules articles were crap, but at least most of the new designs were playable, tho suffering from FASAs editing woes.
OTOH, the Fiction was incredible! I still miss the Cobalt Coil

I'll have to dig in the garage to check the titles, but there were two other battletech magazines I miss two. IIRC, the titles were Mech Factory and Future Wars.

Had some neat fan designs, too bad FASA came down on them.

You missed the greatest mag of all time....Stardate

Total hijack here...

Does anyone else recall when Steve Jackson Games acquired Traveller and the ad they ran in gaming magazines for it?

Layout-wise, it was identical to the box cover of the old black Traveller set (a simple black background with a transcript of the Free Trader Beowulf's mayday tansmission).

Only this time it was a transcript of a response coming from a Naval Patrol vessel

"...Hang on Beowulf, help is on the way"

It gave me goosebumps. SJG was saving Traveller!

Best. Ad. Ever.

Free Trader Beowulf...
Come in, Free Trader Beowulf...
Can you hear me?
Come in, Free Trader Beowulf...
Hang in there Beowulf...
...Help is on the way!

No, never heard of it! :D (you can still find it on the SJ website.)

I have to admit I felt kind of the same way when I saw it back in the '90s, though I believe that Far Future is still producing their version of Traveller as well. One of the few settings I would consider running with GURPS, the only other one being Discworld (though I might port that over to D20) And there is T20 as well, but that really did not grab me. *EDIT* Okay, and GURPS Goblins as well

Back on topic:

I had forgotten about Space Gamer (and its sister Fantasy Gamer)... does anyone remember the 'spot the naked elf' contests?

Technically Pyramid is still around, though it became an e-zine. I have never looked at a copy of the e-version, though there was a scenario that soundid interesting, something called 'Call of Computer'...

I miss Shadis and the Unspeakable Oath most. Those were the only non-Dragon/Dungeon mags I ever bought. :\

Can't believe that I forgot TUO (I wrote reviews for them), thanks for the reminder MrFilthyIke :D

White Dwarf x 10.

That magazine had all kinds of stuff - Cthulhu, Paranoia, D&D, Champions and a wide variety of stuff every month. It does a fine job now, but it is JUST the GW mini line. I miss a magazine that really went into different products and genres.

Christian, are you writing anything these days?

I've been sifting through the wreckage of a divorce for a long time now, but I'm starting to feel it again. I've got some ideas rolling around and some folks have offered text and images. So who knows? Maybe my New Years Resolution will be to get off my dead ass and pen a 33rd ish of S'works.
