I have played mostly Rogues - a Vanara and a gnome - short swords for both, though the Vanara mostly just threw things.

I just made my first fighter, and he is going to use a big-ass Greatsword - while running screaming into combat. He's LG, destroyer of evil.

Hard to say, really. I currently play two PCs, one who uses a katana, the other twinned short swords. In the same campaign there's a longsword-wielding barbarian, a rapier-using ranger, and a gnome druid with a scimitar.

I voted katana 'cause I've used one in another campaign (Shadowrun) as well, but really our group ranges all across the board...

I votet Bastard Sword since most of my Fighters used it, but probably all of my next fighters will choose other weapons (like Flails, Spiked Chains and perhaps some Axes - or Short Sword and Lance?)...

Depends on the character...

Really. :) Smaller characters will use what's appropriate, Rogues will use what's appropriate, as will larger characters. I don't think anyone's used a Greatsword in the games yet (even though my character has one, he prefers a long sword and rapier, dual-weilded).

My personal preferences run towards the long sword, rapier, and scimitar, with a love and appreciation for the naginata that is everlasting. :)

Although I do have an urge to do a short sword/small shield combo for my next character, a la Sophita from Soul Calibur...

Ashtal

I'm partial to scimitars myself, they're just so darn...elegant. Actually I think it stems from my like of oriental weapons (esp. Chinese), the scimitar and the Chinese Dao (broadsword/sabre) are very similiar. I also like rapiers (or at least their stats) for Jiann (Tai-chi sword); again a very elegant weapon. I go more for the look of the weapon.

To piggyback on Ashtal's post, I so want one of my characters to have the Snake Sword from Soul Caliber.

In my campaign, the only swords in the party are the elf wizard's rapier and the elf druid's scimitar. Last time I played a character in a tabletop game, he was a swashbuckler type with a rapier. In the MUD I play, my half-elf fighter wields a longsword and my bard a scimitar.
Finally, in the OA game I'll be joining soon, my shugenja has a wakizashi.
