Most unique RAW-legal item used in a game

I played in a "Monster Game", where players were permitted to play any race at all, other than normal player character races. (Total starting level limited to 3).

The DM allowed for an exception: I was running a Human, but nobody knew it. Thanks to some Bluff skill and a Hat of Disguise (plus the occasional Enlarge Person or Reduce person spell), the other players were convinced that I was running some sort of semi-controlled metamorph. He was an Ogre when they met him. Then he was a Human. Then an Orc. Then a Kobold (thus finishing off my 1st level spells for the day), then a Dark Elf. He was a Stone Giant when it came time for melee combat.

He also used the Hat to alter just his clothing, giving him good camoflauge when scouting. Lots of fun.
That sounds worth an AP write-up, or a link if you have one.

Well, it was an odd situation. The DM is an old friend (30+ years), but as a DM he's predatory and adversarial. His stated reason for allowing a party of evil monsters was because his regular group always ended up going Evil and complained about the constraints the game world put on them. He told me, "I'm doing this to show them just how pathetic they are." (To me, that's a red flag when a DM shows that little respect for his players.)

He likes to mess with the PCs, and he allowed my character to be the exception simply because he was designed to mess with them as well. While he complains about the lack of planning and teamwork, when he sees those traits coming into play his "adversarial" side comes out and he obstructs and disrupts. Any plan his players make that he's aware of *will* run into a situation specifically designed to foul the plan. And as far as he's concerned, it's cheating if they try to make plans without him being present to hear the details.

He's still my friend, but I don't play in his games any more.

That is unfortunately a lot less funny that I had hoped. But thank you.

I've played every D&D edition since the original (Eldritch Wizardry, Chainmail, and Blackmoor). I don't recall the Portable Hole ever working that way.

Which edition are you referring to?

3.0 before the update to 3.5. However, I am relying on the DM's description of the item. 3.0 is one of the few books which I do not have. I have the 2nd ed. books and the 3.5 ed. books, but not the 3.0 to reference. I may be mistaken or the DM may have given me the wrong name/description of the item. It was, however, extremely fun to use.

Well, he had it wrong. The description changed very little between 3.0 and 3.5.

Several spells and items changed descriptions from opening (into) an "extradimensional" space to opening into a "non-dimensional" space. In essence, you can't open a Gate or similar spell into someone's Bag of Holding, etc.

Other than that small wording change, the item is the same.
