Mounted combat question

Just a bit of a sanity check.

As I understand it, a character mounted on a horse and in combat is considered to occupy a 10x10 square. When using a Lance, the reach of the player is 10 foot. So this means that on a horse, a player occupies 10x10 and threatens the outer squares of a 30x30 area, right?

I think this is correct, but wow.. That is a huge area for 1 character to cover

Correct. A character on a horse is a delocalised phenomenon, corresponding to multiple superposed states of the quantum wave function. Adding a lance corresponds to increasing the energy level of the system, causing it to transition to a higher energy state. You can tell this has happened by observing the appearance of absorption lines in the spectrum of the combined horse-rider system. This is usually done in practice by probing the system with a lone particle, such as an orc.

Try casting Enlarge Person on a normally medium fighter with a spiked chain.

Or a Psychic Warrior with a Spiked Chain and Expansion (which can go two size categories).

I thought there was a rule that a rider was considered to occupy the rear space of a mount. I'm guessing that was a 3.0 rule since it was back when horses occupied a 10x5 space, but it occurs to me that my group still uses it.

I kind of liked facing.

Never. I'm more interested in shooting high velocity arrows through the rider trying to localise HIM...

I didn't find the ruling why you cannot attack someone adjacent to the mount... seems to follow from the "logic" that you share your mounts spaces and cannot attack someone adjacent to you with the reach weapon.

I'm not sure if it's right or not, but I have seen this also. The corners would be 15' of movement to move to, and you only have 10' reach.

That was changed in 3.5 to avoid enabling people to close without crossing your threatened area.
