Another vote for Donny Darko. I like movies that play with time.

And on that my favourite recent move has to be MEMENTO. So fascinating it quirkily ranks as my favourite. Guy gets hit on the head, loses short term memory...and the audience gets to share his perspective as the movie unfolds IN REVERSE (last scene first). You know where the hero's going, you just have no clue where he is now, or how he got there.

Movies that play with time, or cause and effect, reveal an important quality of film. Good film does not nead a linear narrative. Neither do good books for that matter -- but while the latter seems a medium best suited for unravelling exposition...movies present the abilty to remain linear in structure, but still breaking narrative expectations...

...wow, just read what I wrote, am I pretentious or what?

All these are guarenteed to be on at least once a week or so, and will often be stopped to watch on TV even if they are in our collection.

Superman and Superman 2
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Invasion!
Six-String Samurai
Young Frankenstein

I'd also say that Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway, both from David Lynch, made me sit back and do a lot of thinking.

Yeah, these two and Firewalk With Me. I'm really a Lynch nut that way. ;)

Then there is Nosferatu -- though none of my friends seem to like it, I need to watch it a couple times each year.

And finally I'd have to add Buckaroo Banzai. What can you say about that film other than, "Extremely strange, but a heckuvalotta fun!"

One movie that really fascinated (not my favorite, but I liked it) was Moulin Rouge (I think I misspelled that). It's a major sensory overload, but I couldn't look away. Big Fish had a similar effect. Must be Ewan McGregor or something...

Movies that I watch over and over.

Caddyshack
The Star War Trilogy
The Godfathers, Pts 1&2
Unforgiven
The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
The Outlaw Josey Wales
The Fellowship Of The Ring
Conan The Barbarian

I know I"m leaving out some....

Movies that really fascinate me are usually movies that have some weird problem that I just can never figure out.

For example, Blade Runner. Am I the only person who's noticed A) that there's a missing replicant? When our hero gets told about the rogue replicants, M. Emmet Walsh clearly says that SIX escaped. One died trying to escape. Then there's Rutger Hauer, Daryl Hannah, the stripper girl and the other one with the photos. That makes five. What the heck happened to replicant number six?

And also (and even more mystifying) at the start of the film whatsisname is getting interrogated in the big office. Interrogation ends when replicant says, "My mother? I'll tell you about my mother," and then he shoots the interrogator. Later on in the film, Deckart is listening to a recording of that episode in the car. The line is different. The replicant says, "My mother? Let me tell you about my mother?"

For the past twenty-some-odd years I've been wondering why the heck that change is in the movie. It was probably just a mistake, but I've always wondered about that.

Am I disturbed? Or has anyone else been bothered by that?
