Moving in Combat

Our party paladin was engaged in combat with an opponent. The opponent disengaged from the Paladin and did nothing bu double his noraml move to engage another opponent. DM said he did not provoke an attack of opportunity.

Just a clarification here: If he does a move-and-attack he does get an AoO. Only if he does nothing else but a regular Move is the first square protected from AoO. Using a regular Move, you can move up to twice your movememnt rate in a round (essentially, you're doing Move-and-Move, instead of Move-and-Attack).
