D&D General Mtg colors for class/subclass

Rather than lore and morality, which are very table and player dependent, i wanna look at what the classes do.

So IIRC

Blue is counter and control

White is Denial/Control/Healing

Green is Brute strength and swarming or what in a battlefield would be area control (a horde of elfs is area control, a big rampaging beast is brute strength)

Red is go boom! And dangerous inventions/devices

Black is Death, both in the necromamcy sense and in the assassination sense

Thing is, many classes can be any of those. And subclass can totally change it. A Battlemaster or open hand monk can be pretty damn Blue, for instance.

Assassin is (in theory) Black but is a thief or Arcane Trickster? Nope. They are at least Blue/Black, maybe even Blue/Red if they are up in the mix.

Rangers can be green, mixing damage output and area control, or they can be all about damage and mobility which is more Red. Gloomstalker could be Black due to stealthy drop-bear style murdering.

Artificer is often more Red than Blue. Red! Go! BOOM!

MTG did a D&D set and they mostly got it right.

Only changes id make are bold

Artificer: Blue
Bard: Red/Green
Barbarian: Red
Cleric: White or Black or White/Black
Druid: Green
Fighter: Red/White
Monk: White/Blue
Paladin: White
Ranger: Blue/Green
Rogue: Blue/Black
Sorceror: Blue/Red
Wizard: Blue
Warlock: Black

Mostly because Clerics are most tied to the nature of dieties, even evil, selfish, or uncivilized ones.

And Rangers have utility and arcana in them. They dont have to be fully one with nature and can be civilization's shield against the wild

It's a solid mix

Clerics and Paladins are white, Wizards and Artifciers are blue , Warlocks are Black, Barbarian is red, Druid and ranger are green, Bard is Red/Green, Fighter is Red/White, Monk is Blue/White, Rogue is Blue/Black, and Sorc is Blue/Red.
Given my color assignments above, I'd say I pegged things pretty damned well.

I put Sorcerer in Green instead of Blue because, while they use arcane magic, it's in the blood. That's pretty much directly what Green is about: accepting what is just naturally the case and following where it leads will make everything better, rather than Blue's detached pursuit of impossible perfection, denying the true nature of things.

Sorcerer isn't Green because Green is tree-hugging hippies; it's Green because it's literally THE class about becoming in tune with your own inner nature and the truths that that reveals.

Yeah, I'd pin sorcerer as blue green myself. Simic is the color about bringing out the best inner self, and refining what you can be to the top of your potential.

I don't see rangers as Simic. Simic wants ultimate knowledge of nature to allow it to speed along nature's evolution. Simic wants to use knowledge as a means to propagate growth.

That doesn't sound like rangers.

But rangers are neccessarily full green.

Rangers are civilized humaniods first. They use armor and weild blades. They usually are men first. They adapt to nature. Adaptation and Lore is blue.

Blue is Knowledge, Creativity, Subtlety, Man-made, Intellect, Trickery Artifice Passivity Mind/Thought Manipulation Illusion Cold Academics Control Construction.

Green, on the other hand, does have Community,
Interdependence, and Spiritualism, which sound more rangery than most of blue.

Hell, Mark Rosewater lists both Tarzan and Buffy the Vampire slayer as touchstone Monogreen characters.

Neither Tarzan nor Buffy seem rangery to me.

To me the real difference between ranger and druid is rangers always have a foot in civilization. And some rangers can fight on the side of civilization or against the wild.

The old school ranger was actual civilized and militaristic on the side of civilization. And the new school ranger has them be master of beasts or an envoy of fey diplomacy.

Seems like either blue green or white green depending on how you slice it. But the loner and xeno hatred streaks of rangers push them away from white a bit.
