Multi Class Skill Points?

Demoquin

First Post
I am making a back up character ahead of time in case something bad happens to my main character.

The character in quiestion will have Rogue and Fighter levels. I am starting at lvl 4

Human
Rog 1 Ftr 3 59 skill points

STR 14
DEX 18
CON 18
INT 14
WIS 12
CHA 10

At first level i will have 44 skill points. then + 5 for each Fighter level. Do i have all skills available to me with the two classes or do i have only the skills of the class i am leveling atm?

The maximum skills are determined by any of your classes, but the skill point cost is determined by your current cost. For example, Disable Device would cost you 2 points to gain 1 rank for every level in Fighter, but you can get it up to 7.

Unless there is an errata of which I don´t know, then you are incorrect...

From the SRD:
Skills: If a skill is a class skill for any of a multiclass character’s classes, then character level determines a skill’s maximum rank. (The maximum rank for a class skill is 3 + character level.)

Nowhere does it say anything about having to pay double for "cross"-class skills... ;)

So, to answer the original question... you have all your class-skills (for both classes!) available to you... :D

Look again:
SRD said:
If you buy a class skill, your character gets 1 rank (equal to a +1 bonus on checks with that skill) for each skill point. If you buy other classes’ skills (cross-class skills), you get ½ rank per skill point.
Edit: also, the danger of taking things out of context:
SRD said:
Regardless of whether a skill is purchased as a class skill or a cross-class skill, if it is a class skill for any of your classes, your maximum rank equals your total character level + 3.
Therefore, you must purchase some skills as cross-class skills even when they are the class skills of one of your other classes.

Sithobi1 is correct... when the level you are adding to your character is the fighter class, you must spend skill points as a fighter, so disable device costs 2 points per rank.

I use a house rule so that all ranks of any class skill on any of a character's classes always is payed for at the 1 to 1 rate, but that is a house rule.

You have to learn skills according to your *current* class, that is, the 5 skill points have to be spent as a Fighter.

The *only* advantage you have from being a Rogue is, that your *maximum rank* in all the Rogue skills is determined in the most favorable way.

For example...

Search is a Rogue class skill and a Fighter cross-class skill.

At 1st level (Rogue) you have 4 ranks in it.

At 2nd level (Fighter) you can have a maximum of 5 ranks in it, since it is a class skill for *any* class you have.
However, since you leveled as a Fighter, and Search is a cross-class skill for Fighters, you only gain half a rank for every skill point, so you would have to spend 2 skill points in order to raise Search from 4 to 5.

So, skill points are spend as normal for a character of that class, only the maximum ranks are affected by multiclassing.

Ok i know that i can only have a certain number of skills (lvl +3 max)

I was asking about say for Hide i put 4 ranks at first level. Then Fighter lvl up. Is Hide still a class skill since i essentially was able to get it before?

Could you post from source? so i know it is official

Hide is class skill for the Rogue and cross-class skill for the Fighter. Multiclassing does not change that in any way. The *only* thing, that is changed, is the allowed maximum ranks.

You do not have one class skill list for your *character*, but rather a seperate list for every *class* your character has.

Here are some quotes from the SRD:

SRD/Skills said:
Each skill point you spend on a class skill gets you 1 rank in that skill. Class skills are the skills found on your character’s class skill list. Each skill point you spend on a cross-class skill gets your character 1/2 rank in that skill. Cross-class skills are skills not found on your character’s class skill list. (Half ranks do not improve your skill check, but two 1/2 ranks make 1 rank.) You can’t save skill points to spend later.

The maximum rank in a class skill is the character’s level + 3. If it’s a cross-class skill, the maximum rank is half of that number (do not round up or down).

Regardless of whether a skill is purchased as a class skill or a cross-class skill, if it is a class skill for any of your classes, your maximum rank equals your total character level + 3.

If a skill is not a class skill for any of a multiclass character’s classes, the maximum rank for that skill is one-half the maximum for a class skill.
