Multi-class Wizard/Sorcerer, Is it Viable?

Oni

First Post
It seems to be a pretty commonly held opinion that spellcaster really lose out if they if they don't stay single classed.

Do you guys think that there is anyway to build a Wizard/Sorcerer that would be viable, capable of contributing meaningfully to a party, or would they be a useless waste of space?

Yes, it's doible. A Ring of Wizardry will double each classes spells of that level. I'd suggest feats like Spell pentration and greater spell pentration since the caster level for getting through SR will be difficult.

And to plug a forthcoming book, Heroes of High Favor: Elves by Bad Axe Games will have a prestige class geared towards a Wizard/Sorcerer. I think it comes out in Decemeber.

Course if you go that route, Oni, you'd have to get a Ring of Mesos. This way you can double your 1-4 level spells AND be able to cast metamagic feats without increasing the casting time. :)

I think it is a great idea if you don't mind losing out on the highest level spells, in favor or a lot of lower level spells. You just spont cast your fav buffing and blasting spells, and the wiz part of you can memorize the utility spells.

Plus- you get two familiars...

But you really lose out if you are planning on being the group's main caster. Make sure there is an arcane caster somehwer else in the group cause you will the blasting power of the full sorc, and the usefulness of a full mage.

I've seen one when playing Living Greyhawk and it was useless. You lose far too much spellcasting ability IMHO. For example at 6th, if evenly divided, you will be able to cast some 2nd and a huge amount of 1st. Compared to a 6th level single class you are dead meat. He's flinging fireballs, and you're flinging... magic missile? Melf's Acid arrow? Insults?

I personally believe that multiclassing is most often a mistake for a spellcaster.

It really depends on the focus of the game.

I prefer the low to mid-levels. Say 2-10, and you can create a viable multiclass PC in there but you need to be sort of focused.

I would pick up only 2 or 3 levels of Sorcer for your Mage armors and MM bu then focus on wizard from then on.

It is unavoidable that a multiclass character (not just spell casters) miss out in hte long run over single class ones. Its just the way it works and I think the way it should work.

Maybe after your higher levels it isn't so bad. An even build sucks for levels 1-10, but a 20 wizard/12 Sorcerer wouldn't be too bad. Also, the experience from all those levels as wizard would tell you what spell selection to take as a sorcerer, and all your normal feats can still be spent on Wizard development. Epic Spell Penetration would make up for as much as 10 levels of Sorcerer lost, so that's the most you can sacrifice without starting to fail caster level checks to beat SR...

Just IMO of course...

This is Nightfall we are talking about... Scarred Lands, I'm sure :)

I think it could work if you did a few wizard levels with sorcerer. You won't be winning any powergaming contests, but losing a sorcerer level or two might be worth being able to memorize different 1st level utility spells like Feather Fall, especially the ones with weak caster level dependence, Endure Elements, Sleep, Jump, True Strike, Detect Secret Doors, etc.
