Multiclassed (2 classes) characters

My initial thinking on the even-level multiclass was sort of -- The PCs start off as mere mortals working their way to godhood. When they reached 20/20 (40th level), they could get a Divine Rank.

This sounds really cool. Are you going to be allowing prestige classes? Since there are prestige classes that mix the cleric with another class would you permit someone to go Cl5/wiz5/Mystic Theurge10 for the first 20 levels for instance.

In answer to your original question I think it is really going to depend on the classes. I can see some having okay synergy like a Barbarian/cleric of Kord but it would be easy for a player to make a character that is weak. But everyone having some access to healing will be a cool boon.

I disagree: it's not that specialisation is rewarded or required; specialisation is assumed.

Er, I don't really see that as disagreement, but okay. :)

Let's say specialization is assumed, expected, rewarded and sometimes required (if a particular spell is needed to complete part of a plot).

Is a wizard/cleric less effective than a fighter/cleric or a rogue/cleric of same levels?

Yes and no. Clerical and wizardly casting are not synergistic at all. However, each suite of abilities is itself useful.

If you houseruled caster level checks to be Spellcraft checks and raised the DCs by 5 or so, you would probably see pretty good parity.

I initially tried something similar IMC. I required every player to multiclass with a psionic class.
Didn't work at all, though. The players simply weren't happy with it and the first party experienced a TPK pretty early in their career. There were no psionic pcs for some time after that.

As time went by and I had been able to showcase some psionic npcs in action some players started picking up levels without any need to enforce it. Now, they're pretty cool with psionics (actually, several players started to complain psionics were overpowered, oh well, ...).
