Multiclassing and Skill Points

Question about distributing skill points:

Say I start out by taking a level of thief, thus getting a whole load of class skills. Then, I take a level of fighter. When I add my skill points from the fighter level, are those skills that are class skills for thief still class skills, or are they considered cross-class skills for that level?

The reason I ask this is that I've always been under the impression that a class skill is a class skill is a class skill, no matter what class you're leveling up with; but programs like PCGen make the distinction of what class the skill points are coming from.

Thanks.

A class skill is indeed a class skill is a class skill - but only for the class you just took, as Crothian pointed out.

When taking a level of fighter, you've trained/concentrated on getting better as a fighter, so neither does your Ref save improve as if you'd taken a level of rogue, you won't get Gather Information as a class skill for that level.

Blame it on the class system...

However, your Max Ranks in any skill you have on any class list is Character Level +3.

Any skill that doesn't appear on any of your class lists is limited to half that.

So even though when your Rog1 levels to Rog1/Ftr1, he needs to pay two points for a rank in Move Silently (since it's a cross-class skill for a Fighter), his Max Rank is 5 (since it's a class skill for a Rogue).

His Max Rank in Knowledge: Nature, on the other hand, is 2.5, since it's neither a Rogue class skill nor a Fighter class skill.

It's a class skill for max ranks purposes only, so a Rogue 1/Fighter 1 can have up to 5 ranks in Gather Information. But each rank costs 2 pts when levelling as a fighter.
