Multiple bonusses in magic items!?

Quinnman

First Post
Sitting and wanting to add "of Resistance" to my Periapt of Wisdom +2... looking in the DMG 3.5 it says:

Multiple Different Abilities:
"... . For items that do take up a space on a character´s body (such as a ring or a necklace), each additional power not only has no discount but instead has a 50% increase in price. A belt of Strength +4 and Dexterity +4 is more valuable than a belt of Strength worn with gauntlets of Dexterity, since it takes up only one space on a character´s body."

In table 7-33 though it says:

Multiple Different Abilities:
"Multiply higher item cost by 2"

???

Which is correct?... and what happens when I want to upgrade the wisdom bonus to +4 or the resistance bonus to +2 or 3?

Plz help me out here, I´m totally confused :(

Ok - thanx... but what then when I want to upgrade? Does the wisdom bonus also cost x1,5 to upgrade, or is it only the resistance bonus that has increased costs?

The rules in the DMG for creating new items are meant only as a guideline.

New Items are always subject to DM's approval. I guess that's what he meant. :)

Oh, and there is an errata for the DMG, which addresses the diparity you mentioned (it's always +50% of the cheaper power).

Bye
Thanee

The cost of a Periapt of Wisdom +2 and Resistance +X would be, depending on X:

X = 1 -> 4,000 gp for Wis, plus 1,000 gp for Resistance. Increase Resistance by 50% since it's the cheapest, so 5,500 gp
X = 2 -> 4,000 Wis + 4,000 Resistance, increase either one by 50%, for 10,000 gp.
X = 3 or more -> Wis will be cheaper, so it's the (bonus squared)*1,000 gp for resistance, plus 6,000 for Wis.

Previous item cost not important unless making from new however for completeness:

item of wisdom +2

Base price = 2x2x1000gp = 4000gp

item of resistance +5

Base price = 5x5x1000gp = 25000gp

To add the resistance to the wisdom item need to add 50% of the most expensive power to the cost. In our example

25000gp+12500gp = 37500gp

So the upgrade cost will be 37500gp to buy or 18750gp/1500xp to upgrade oneself.

If you have a +5 resistance item and want to add +2 wisdom then the upgrade cost would be

4000gp (for the +2 wisdom power) + 12500gp (for incorporation) = 16500gp /8250gp/660xp (base/make/xp).

To make new it would be

25000gp + 4000gp + 12500gp = 41500gp/20750gp/1660xp (base/make/xp)

Huh? you can make items with multiple abilities? Can i add an ability to an item i have, or does the item need to be made that way from the start?

Yes, items can be made with multiple abilities, however c47 has made a slight mistake. When making an item from scratch, generally consider the most expensive ability to be the base item then add +50% to the cost of all other abilities given to the item.

To add an ability to an existing item, the existing item is considered the base item and all abilities added to it would have their costs increased by +50%.

When upgrading an item (increasing abilities already present in an item), you must determine the cost to make the item as it currently is and the cost of the item as it will be after upgrade. You then pay the difference in the costs. (Belt of Giant Strength +4 costs 16000; Belt of Giant Strength +6 costs 36000; To upgrade from the +4 belt to the +6 belt would require 20000 gp market price.)
