Multiple Cohorts?

I've always thought that the leadership feat only allowed for one cohort...

However in the DMG on page 104, 2nd paragraph under the "cohorts" section states:

There are no limitations on the class, race, or gender of a chacter's cohorts, nor limits to the number of cohorts who can be employed by a character.

It goes on on page 106 under the "leadership (general)" feat to refer to cohorts in both the singular and plural sense.

Does this confuse anyone else? (I posted this on wotc's forums and nobody had a firm answer on this rule)

it has been my assumption that one can take the leadership feat multiple times to gain multiple cohorts (and more followers). So the "no limit" would be true in theory, though any actual character would be limited by the number of feats they can burn on leadership...

I think Monte Cook was asked this once, and he pointed out that all the feats that can be taken multiple times are indicated on the Feat List, and Leadership isn't one of them; however, if someone in his game wanted to spend multiple feats on Leadership, he'd let them.

I'd be inclined in this case to impose the -2 penalty for "Has a Familiar, Special Mount, or Animal Companion" to the character's Leadership score, though.

KB is right, as clarified by Monte more than a year ago. One cohort per feat, but feel free to take the feat multiple times.

Hmm...

I'd still be inclined to call that a (perfectly reasonable) house rule.

Every other feat that can be taken multiple times specifically says so.

Yup, it's one that I'd use as well... even though cohorts are a heavy duty power boost for the party.

That would seem to be a reasonable idea.

Thanks for replying guys...
