I did something like this a long time ago (in a different RPG). When the PC went to sleep, his non-dominate side woke up and took control of the body until the PC would awaken. I didn't tell the PC what was happening, as it was the result of a fairly evil twist based on the game's mechanics, but he would occasionally wake up in strange locations. His evil side eventually became the villain for the campaign when it made a deal with a hag to setup the party for destruction.
Another idea would be to create Legion, son of Charles Xavier, as a PC (best suited for one-shots and less serious games). You roll after each Long Rest to see which personality takes over for the day. That personality has it's own Class and mental abilities, but Str, Dex, and Con stay the same. You'd probably have to earn XP for each personality though
