Munchkin Powers Activate...Form of a Hill Giant!

Felon

First Post
There's a player in my regular group who both embodies and redefines every quality that anyone anywhere has ever thought of as munchkin. And believe me, it's scary how little hyperbole there actually is in that statement.

His latest character is 11 Wiz/1 Clrc. His tactics with this character are not very intricate, but its effectiveness has proven itself time and again. Review and comment, if you please:

1) Decks himself out with the best fighter gear he can find. Even takes a few fighter feats like Power Attack.

2) Polymorphs himself into the biggest, strongest monster he can get away with. He's currently trying out a hill giant for size (literally).

3) First round of battle he uses a wand of Divine Power on himself, giving him the BAB and number of attacks of a 12th-lvl fighter, plus 12 extra temporary HP.

4) Wreaks carnage, carnage, carnage that the front line tanks are hard-pressed to match.

Essentially, he becomes a warrior with better stats than he'd likely otherwise have from any ECL 0 race, plus 10' reach and +9 natural armor and gets to wield a Huge weapon. Oh, and he can cast spells as an 11th-level Wizard.

I understand that come 3.5e there will be changes to Polymorph, although I have to wonder if they'll be significant enough to make a difference (if duration's the only major change, then it's just a matter of adding another wand to the mix). Anyone know if spell-activation items are getting any tweaks to keep a character from taking a level of Wizard or Cleric just so they can cast 1st-4th-level spells through wands?

If he wants to be a fighter, why not just play a fighter?

Well, like I said, he gets a lot of benefits out of it that a "real" warrior class doesn't get.

Oh, btw, I'm not the DM of the campaign with this character. He actually gets pretty pissed-off when I'm running because of all the stuff he can't get away with. On one occasion he kicked me out of his house on an occasion when I ruled against him. He is a nice guy otherwise though lol.

Problems?

It sure does sound as if the guy has munchkinitis..... but that only happens when a DM lets his or her campaign get out of control... The DM needs to use similar tactics against the party...

Oh man, you really gotta understand...this guy does not know any other way to be. He is the avatar of munchkinitis. He's been playing like this 20 years or so, and it's just gotten worse. He isn't going to wake up some day and realize what a hollow sham his life has been lol. He'd sooner give up playing altogether and going back to painting his minis full-time.

Before it's brought up, there are reasons he hasn't been exiled. He owns tons of miniatures, not to mention the battlemap. Oh, and a big house with a big table that's available any time of the day or night. Also, we've known him a long time and consider him a good friend, despite how it may sound.

First of all, it all seems to be legal. The character is paying for the Wand of Divine Power and the fighter gear, so he's going to have a lot less wizarding gear than your standard wizard. Plus he's lost a spellcasting level by taking a level of cleric, and he's using all his feats for melee feats (such as Power Attack) instead of metamagic feats such as Empower Spell, or Spell Focus.

In the end, he's given up a lot of his wizard-power for melee-power. And that melee power isn't even as reliable as it seems at first. Sure, he's in hill giant form with a fighter's BAB, but he still has the hp of an 11th-level wizard. If he and a real hill giant traded blows for a few rounds, he'd be paste. And if he gets in a tangle with a real wizard, he's going to make a poor showing as well.

This player may be a munchkin at heart, but he's far from mastered the craft. At his current level, the system can handle him with ease. :)

As Lord Pendragon pointed out, the character as designed has a lot of major weaknesses. Assuming his first level was as a cleric, he has 11d4 + 20 + (12 x Con) hp when using Divine Power, which is very low for a front-line combatant at his level. His Reflex save is incredibly bad in Hill Giant form: +2 (+3 base - 1 from Dex) + magic items and/or feats. A couple of damage-causing spells, and he's at death's door. Not to mention what happens if he's hit by a targeted dispel magic.

Maybe he should spend some time hanging around the boards here and find out how us real munchkins do it :D

Out of interest, how does he get a Huge weapon? Polymorphing himself doesn't increase the size of a weapon, and neither does Divine Power. And don't tell me he somehow lugs a Huge weapon around with him when he's normal sized?

Also, remember his AC is modified by his increased size.
