Must-have monsters for a playtest?

If your D&D does not have a Flumph, then you are NOT playing D&D at all!

Plus throw in a Beholder (who, of course, is a slave to the almighty Flumph)

also what are you using to test 'saving throws?

Depends on what you mean.

I'm using Fort, Ref and Will as defenses in the same way as 4e, but I'm also have save ends effects that each have their own DC. So "Save ends on a 14+".

So for that kind of effect, I have several swarms, poison, etc. Not to mention spells and stuff.

For the record, here's what a monster looks like in the system (at least, v. 0.23):

Giant Tarantella Spider--- XP ?
Medium 1st level skirmisher/4th level controller
Hit Dice: 1d6+2d8+3 (15 hp); AC: 12
Melee: +3; Fort: 13
Ranged: +0; Reflex: 16
Spell: +0; Will: 14

Perceptions Tremorsense in webs
Initiative +1; Speed 30', climb 25' (spider climb)
Languages -

Str 15, Int 1, Wis 13, Dex 17, Con 11, Cha 8

TRAITS
Expert Biter:
A giant tarantella gets a +2 bonus on attack and damage rolls with its bite attack and a +1 bonus to initiative.

STANDARD ACTIONS
Bite (poison):
+5 vs. AC; 1d3+2 damage plus poison (ongoing 1d3 Wisdom damage and the target dances, moving 3 squares in a random direction at the start of each round and granting combat advantage; save ends on a 12+).

Playtest, eh? Something to make sure the rules are up to snuff?

Lenarian Hydra (multiple heads and regeneration)
Manticore (flies and shoots spikes)
Chimera (flies and multiple attacks and breath weapon)
Lich (lots o spells, phylactery)

As a DM i'd say your list is significantly lacking in flying foes.

The bases I'd want to cover are:
- Some normal animals (baseline)
- Some dire animals (baseline + hp & damage output)
- Something that flies
- Something that imposes various conditions
- Something that ignores common magical attacks
- Something that ignores common weapon attacks
- "Terrain" / "Trap" monsters + Harrier monsters
- NPCs with Classes

- - -

So, my list would be:
- Pack of Wolves
- Harpy archer + Assassin Vine
- 2 Owlbears + 2 Druids (or archery Rangers)
- Trolls + anything with a non-fire / non-acid area attack
- Necromancer + small squad of Skeletons
- Sorcerer + small squad of mid-level Demons
- Black Ooze + a Beholder
- Iron Golems + a Huge Red Dragon (Sorcerer)

Cheers, -- N

Kobold- kobold
Kobold- kobold scoundrel
Kobold- kobold assassin
Kobold- kobold wyrmpriest
Kobold- kobold chieftain

my favorites, but there seems to be a missing variety. A winged Kobold called an Urd, i think. Favorite tactic is to swoop down and throw javalins ( flying charge effect that grants penalty to it self from issle fire, bonus to hit for them, but requires a fly skill check to pull out of the dive.)

Some 'created' monsters: golems, caryatid columns etc. seem to be missing...
Also some fey like creatures: brownie/pixy/selkie/faun etc.
If you go 'old school', the various PC races as opponents (dwarves, elves etc.)
Intelligent undead: the Vampire and/or Lich
Also missing: giants!
