Mutants in a fantasy world

Tinker Gnome

Adventurer
Well I was thinking about introducing some really messed up looking mutant type creatures in my Forgotten Realms game. The best explaination I can come up wtih a a meteor hitting and impacting an area and messing with the local populace. Now I hope to have REALLY messed up looking mutants, like the ones on the cover of this game. So I am thinking the meteor one is hwat I am going with, but a magical explosion would seem good too. Does anyone know if there are any completely free products with anything pertaining to really messed up mutants?

It's not free, but you should get a copy of Dungeon #94 for the Polyhedron mini-game Omega World. It will give you what you need with d20 mechanics.

How about a meteor followed by a magical explosion (of the meteor); it would have that 1950s feel, and there wouldn't simply be a meteor that high level characters could teleport somewhere. A comet passing overhead could also work if you wanted limited effects.

Frankly? There are weirder creatures in the Monster Manual. One of the guys in that picture looks like a minature owlbear, and there's nothing to rival illithids and certain other aberrants.

I favour cosmetics as a solution to your problems. Frex, take a zombie. Change its type to Aberration so it's no longer vulnerable to undead turning (but keep its hit dice) etc. Say 'This is a Shambling Mutant, it's got weird green skin and bulbous eyes'. Use the original stats. Presto, new monster which is not quite like anything else - it's slow, tough, and implacable. Or take a yuan-ti, call it a Sidewolf, and replace all the graphics of snakes with hideous mutant coyote parts dripping with venom. Presto, weird monster that can still constrict even though it doesn't have an apparent reason to do so, and that's freaky. Or take a troll, and describe it as the Cave Ghoul Dog, a four-legged reptilian creature with feathers and huge, pupil-less eyes, just because you can - there's nothing quite like that in physical shape, but physical shape has virtually no bearing on the rules.

Now, as to they why of the mutants... perhaps an asteroid lands. In the middle of a mass magical ritual. Being performed by aboleths. I think that's a good reason for horrible, slimy mutants to suddenly be everywhere - they've been contaminated by altered aboleth slime, which mutates people anyway.

Chaositech from Monte Cook has got rules for chaos mutations, you should check it out. d20 Future also has rules for mutants, although IIRC similar ot the aforementioned Omega World/Polyhedron rules.

Now that is a good and easy to use idea. Not to mention it will creep my players out. :)

When I saw the title of this thread I thought it was going to be about running an X-Men style game in a D&D world.

Anyway, comets are nice to use. They were often thought to bring bad luck. Another explaination could be the appearance of a bright new star in the sky. (The planet is bathed in cosmic radiation from a nearby stellar explosion) Or, you could make it the result of extraplanar meddleing. Maby some Far Realm cultists are abducting people and exposing them to the energy of the outer realm.
