Mutants & Masterminds may just be my favorite OGL book yet!

So, I've completed reading M&M and have made a few test characters. And I love it!

I particularly like the way they broke d20 crunchy bits down into little bite sized chunks, and assigned values to them and balanced them with the PP system. And the clever balance of PP to Level so that M&M is fully compatable with any other d20 game is so cool.

Is it just me, or should d20 Modern have been made more like this game?

M&M is great at what it does, and I like it a lot (having even played it a bit already!) However, I like d20 Modern just fine the way it is. It would probably be too hard to use other d20 material with d20 Modern if it played like M&M.

Doubt it. It would be more difficult to convert with other Wizards' RPG, especially Dungeons & Dragons. The last thing you want is to have two smaller audience.

Nevertheless, I like M&M for being innovative with the SRD content. I do expect more companies to take the plunge and develop standalone OGL products in the near future.

Don't get me wrong, I love d20 Modern! What I do think may have been better for d20 Modern, is if they'd taken the approach M&M did by breaking all the little crunchy game factors down into bite size chunks and giving them PP values. Really balances the game nicely, and you can create anything with it!

That is why I think what monte is doing with Arcana Unearthed is great!

You should check out The Custom Hero, which is a classless, point-based system for d20 Modern. It breaks everything down into points, and is compatible with the rest of d20 Modern. Plus, it breaks down talents and advanced class abilities into 120 new feats.

The Custom Hero can be found at...

MnM is not perfect, but it is very useful. I keep reading all these threads about "How do I do this class/monster/magic item?" And all I can think is "These message boards would be a lot quieter if everyone was using MnM."

Designing PC concept, enemy or toy is a snap, why does everyone else want to work so hard. :)

Yet, sometimes I also yearn for something a bit more ... complex, and that is what regular d20 is for. :)

And if you couldn't guess my opinion of MnM, you haven't been reading the message board enough. LOL!

Well, Natural 20 Press's "Four-Color to Fantasy: Modern Edition" will be out soon, and in my opinion it will be the best mesh of superhero rules and d20 Modern. I'm planning to make the draft of the rules available to those folks on the boards who have posted storyhours and online games.

I don't know. For me, the point-based system work for well for creating superhero PC but for other genres ... I basically don't know.

All I can tell you is this kind of game would be far to the left field when it comes to what is d20. Which is why it is smart of Chris Pramas and Green Ronin to make the move to produce a standalone OGL-based product without the trademarked d20 System logo.

IOW, it may appeal to people who have a dislike for D&D but won't realize until they enjoyed playing MnM that they're playing with the fundamantal D&D core rules. Hehehe. :D
