My basic world map (Finished!)

Velik

First Post
I have finished the basics for my world map and wanted to get some input from you guys. I still need to put in some more features like major towns & roads, labels for areas, some minor features like swamps, compass etc. The file is too large to post here (2500x2500 pixels) so I made a web page for it.

Any kind of feedback would be nice. I am not necessarily going for a publish quality map, just something I think looks good.

For those interested, I used Fractal Mapper 6 with symbols I traced from CC2 then put into Paint Shop Pro 7

Heath

With a little more of a mix of terrain and all that stuff you mentioned, I think it will be a nice, simple map. Keep it up. :)

Yikes! What's the scale on that? That is a Bucket-load o' land!

But despite the mind boggling size, it looks a very cool map.:D

The scale of the map is about 800x800 miles, its basically the known world. The parts on the far left and top are uncharted areas, they might be populated but wanted to leave some mystery to some of it. When I start putting in the towns I'm going to put in the capitols and just label the regions, terrain features, and any major points of interest. I want to try to get the feel of an old world map where just the major features and areas of interest are labeled, not every little landmark or city. I am going to break the map up into regions and try to map those out in more detail.

Do the terrain features so far look like something you would see in real life? I was hoping when I put it together that it might look like something that really existed. Do you guys think I pulled that off? :D

Thanks everyone for your kind words so far.

I like the fact you have left an unexplored are on it

Good start!
If you want it to look like something that really existed,I can offer a couple of suggestions...:)
First, at 800x800 miles, you'll have to get a bit more detailed than you plan, or else you will have a lot of vast space (even with uncharted areas)...and at that scale, you would have fewer, but much larger mountain ranges.
You would also want to add a LOT more water-lakes,ponds,creeks,and more rivers, and they tend to form basins in between the mountainous areas. A lot more trees, too...
You might try adjusting the scale of the symbols in CC2 to pull off the larger mountain ranges.
That said, the colours look great (though you might want to go with a blue or green shade for the water), and it definitely looks like parchment. Choose a nice font for the labeling, too,to go with the 'antiqued' look.
Nice work, hope to see more (not size,progress,LOL)...

Thanks Scorpio,

I intentially left out alot of the terrain features. I wanted to just chart the main things that everyone in the world might have heard of. All the smaller lakes, rivers, forests ect. will be done on the smaller regional maps.

As for the water color, I wrestled with what to do and i'm thinking of making the whole map sepiatone with a red lettering :D
