D&D 4E My compiled list of 4E's WoWisms

What's a quest card?

A quest card was an OPTIONAL idea WotC had for the DM to hand out an index card as a reminder to the players about certain quests they are on. There is speculation as to whether the quest rewards would also be written on this card (I assume that is up to the DM). Most players write these down themselves, we call them "notes" :) But since WotC formalized it as Quest Cards (again, an OPTIONAL idea), it seems to replicate a character's Quest Journal from video games (yes, not just WoW).

There have been so many WOW-appropriations revealed since 4.0's announcement that it's not credible to deny the accusation anymore.

I tend to agree, and whilst I don't feel it's wholly a bad thing, denying it's a thing at all seems really... well... silly.

My point was, the accent in the video could have been selected specifically to make fun of the WoW accent, or to poke fun at the internetters shouting "4E is WOW OMG!!!!!!"

It suggested satire to me, not influence.

I can see this point. People were also upset about the Gnome now being a monster, and they played that satire aspect up as well (I have a lair now!).

Still, coincidence or on purpose, the fact remains that they both have a similiar accent. If it is on purpose, it illustrates the point that people know what they are up to!!! Stealing ideas from WoW, for shame ;) (yeah people, that's a joke!)

People deny that WOW has influenced 4e because they're sick to death of comparisons like this, but since apparently even neutral parties want to discuss something that, as far as I can tell, will have zero impact on my or anyone else's 4e experience, those brave souls, willing to compromise their morals for the rest of us, have failed.

I shed a tear in their honor.

That was very poetic, but you lost me after the first coma... :(

Most of this seems like a huge stretch, and was done by pen and paper games before it was done by WOW. Heck, some of it was done by D&D itself before there even was a WOW.

This seems like a case of people positing a conclusion, and then trying to find facts to back it up, rather than the other way around.

Sort of like, if you become convinced that the Number 23 is behind everything in the game, you can then look for the Number 23 throughout the game and try to claim that proves you were correct. If you are looking hard enough for anything as an influence for any other thing, you will find it. But only when you objectively start without a conclusion will you obtain an actual objective answer to the question of "what things could have motivated this change".

Ooh, I thought of some more:

-There have been mentions of wizards casting fire-based attack spells, presumably based on spells like "Scorch" from WoW.
-Warlocks can make pacts with demons, clearly based on WoW's warlock minions.
-Fighters tend to have a lot of HP in 4e. WoW warriors much?
-Clerics (or should I say PRIESTS) will use magical connections to supernatural deities to heal their allies.
-In both games, groups of humanoids (of various species) team up to battle various other humanoids and monsters in the hope of gaining treasure and experience.

I think you're onto something here!

There have been so many things mislabeled as WoW-appropriations since 4.0's announcement, that it's quite credible to deny the accusations.

WoW has clearly had an influence on 4e. I just don't like seeing people making false assertions to blame anything they don't like in 4e on WoW, or as proof that WotC is "turning D&D into WoW". Much of what appears in the original post is accurate(though alot of it comes from video games that predate WoW, but that isn't entirely relevant). Saying "roles" are a WoWism though is extremely inaccurate, and I've grown really tired of seeing it treated as fact.

I just find the people who deny that WotC is doing this... well... in denial :) It just makes me shake my head and roll my eyes, that's all.
I see. I read your posts to mean that WotC was denying the inspiration.
