My concerns for D&D Insider

My biggest concern is that no software tools will be released for purchase, just rental, and at what sounds like a rip-off price(MORE than the combined cost of Dungeon and Dragon?).

Looking the original thread with the description of D&D Insider - that description was from November of 2006. Here on EnWorld.

I'd expect some of that may have been morphed, dropped, or new things added since then.

The automatic ownership of content? Good. TSR/D&D got burned on that with the Dungeon CD-ROM. There's a million internet wanna-be lawyers out there. Just claim ownership up front and get it over with. Many IP industries are trending this way so they don't get burned when they open up a letter and find some guy's magnum opus that's very similar to something they'd been working on already.

They don't have to go that far, though. Just have the submitters grant WOTC a perpetual license to publish the stuff in whatever format. Like RPG.net does when you submit a review to them.

I really hope the "three times a month" usage of the virtual tabletop has morphed into "unlimted use".

And some people who are worrying about this sort of thing are the same as those who said that d20 was a strategy for WotC to "steal" material from other publishers. So I guess people can be wrong about stuff ...

Greetings!

Well, I admit, I am concerned about the whole "anything you write on those boards is WOTC property". However, I do have players that really like being able to make characters up digitally, and that sort of thing. In that respect, it does make character generation faster, and smoother. That, in itself, will likely be an important factor in expanding the hobby and attracting new players.

I thought that WOTC should have done something like this a long time ago with E-tools, but obviously, for some reasons unexplained, a huge company with vast resources and lots of accessible talent effed it up.

In a video they stated that there would be new content 3 times a week. I would like it if they compiled this into a pdf for purchase every month. the subscribers would get it first, but others could get it eventually in a format that they prefer...

Having used ETools and simular programs for the last five years... I welcome the DnDinsider. Finally WoTC produces software inhouse with what i will hope - support 24/7, no long years waiting for patches to come out, having to cope with inferior programming and user unfriendliness, and finally the moment I buy the book I get access to the dataset without having to do any programming for myself. Woot.!

On the other hand I prefer my programs without the graphic nonsense and paperdoll effects. All I want is a stable generator to build monsters and PCs in. If the DnDinsider will provide that Im happy. Any word on how many monsters You can build and store by the way? I hope that number isn´t 10 as well.
