My first TPK

Agreed. Hence my house rule.

So, what, you removed fireball from the game? Because nothing stops a character in their tracks like death....

That wouldn't be much of a solution. If you want to take death out of the game, you simply take death out of the game, which I have. Makes things work much better for me and my group.

Confusion
Hold Person/Monster
Maze
Time Hop (psioncs)
Vorpal weapons

Don't be silly. I get that characters die, I've had it happen to me, I've caused it as a DM. The powers mentioned are not overpowered, they're common as dirt, but overall they reduce the fun that I feel, or perhaps some others feel while playing the game.

Save or Die isn't exciting... it's gambling. If I want to play craps, I'll head to the Wynn, or the Venetian. If I want to play D&D, I'll play that.

Some of these, run 1/rd per level, some allow a save to elminate the effect (time hop etc...) but in a moderately high level game, say 10th level or so, a combat round can run a long time... 20 minutes even 30 or more. Let's say that I fail a save or two or three... that keeps me from playing for an hour or more? hmmmm.

If you want em in your game. no problem. Are there circumstances where those spells are in play in my game Absolutely... Will I ban those spells in my game? NO. I don't have to like them though.

And your whining over being offended offends ME. How about we both agree not to whine about being offended and leave this thread to people that are actually having substantive discussion instead of accusing others of being horrible human beings?

But... but...but... this is the INTERNET!!!

Yanking the thread back on track, I'd say that it happens. Don't blame yourself: they had three characters with high will saves. Their cohort will now always devote a spell slot to spells that get rid of enchantments. If you never use things like enchantments and compulsions, it somewhat undercuts the classes that have good will saves anyway. (As a player, if I'm sure that the DM won't use charms and compulsions, I'll not cover that weakness, which makes my character slightly stronger than it should be.)

Use it to your advantage: they're high level characters who are going to be missed by their patrons. Let the patrons bring them back so as to have the players owe him a severe debt of gratitude. Or have the villains use neutral clerics to lure them back from death and let evil ensue.

Finally, you've neglected to tell us the most important bit: did the players have fun? Yes, high stakes playing can be fun and yes, anxiously waiting out confusion effects can be fun.

And getting to smack other characters without consequence? DEFINITELY fun.

That's one of my pet peeves. I hate anything that interferes with the player's sense of agency over his or her character.

Just pisses me off. It's not fun at all.
