My fluid gaming group... how is yours?

Fluid! Most definitely. I only run PbP games, and players there are even more fluid than I would otherwise imagine. There's nothing worse than having to find another player because you've lost one who disappeared without saying a word.

In one campaing I ran we started with 8 players, only 3 of which remained to the end two and half years later. But, in total, about 15 or so players actually took part in the game during that period.

The game I'm currently running has been going for six months. We're on our fourth cleric. 4 of the original 6 remain. Here's to hoping we can finish with those four and the two we've picked up along the way.

My group has been fairly stable. Sure, we've had a couple players leave and occasionally come back, but 90% of the time its just the regualr 6 guys (myself and 5 players). I won't run for more than 5 so that limits when new bods can join the fray.

My group is rather ADDish when it comes to gaming (I can said that, I've got the whole ADD shebang)....we tend to be making new characters nearly every session, jumping worlds, systems, rules sets...whatever...

My group formed May; has managed to meet less than a dozen times since then; and, as of Tuesday, has gone through three DMs, each of whom was starting their own campaign (I think the record for longevity so far is four sessions.).
There's no single good explanation for this dismal outing. One DM was running too many other games to keep up another campaign; a second was commuting an hour to play, and had a job that kept him out of town for a month at a time; the third was just too inexperienced. And everyone of us has had to cancel for one reason or another at some point.

That we even continue to try is a testament to our fierce desire to play and the good time we have when we do get going.

Next week, we're trying a new tack: Just "back-to-basics" D&D with an off-the-shelf adventure. No campaigns, no detailed character backgrounds, no special rules. Just old-fashioned fun.

Keep your fingers crossed for us. ;)

There are quite a few of us in our group that have played together for years, as well as some new members (well, relatively new- less than a year, certainly). Let's see, in what I'd call our 'regular' group of players we've got:

Aaron, Dave, Vic- old gamer buddies who used to live in a different town with me where we gamed. The campaign continues to follow up on things from those days.

Bill, Rob, Matt, James- have gamed with us for years, pretty much since I moved down to Davis.

Brian, Chris- new guys in the group.

We have occasional rotations in and out, but usually our group remains fairly consistent across time and space. :)

The roster of my game group has changed at least five times since 1998. I have a stable of about 15 gamers I know, and who I game with changes on what time of year it is and how much time they can contribute. So far the past two years, it's been the same 5 to 8 people, pretty stable by my standards. I hope the group stays together, but two of the players may be leaving due to job changes, which is a sad thing since they're pretty good players.

But I've consistantly gamed for the past 7 years (after a three year hiatus in the 1990s) and if this group suddenly finds itself playerless, I'll form another one ASAP. If I don't game, I get old, persnickety, and bitter quickly. ;)
