I’d suggest getting him either the new 2024 PHB or one of the Starter / Essentials boxes. The new rules to the game are going to be the standard for years to come. While a lot of people started with the 2014 books, many/most of them are switching to the 2024 books. Besides, this is the big new thing. It’s brand new stuff. There’s an excitement to that.

If he doesn’t have dice, find out what his favorite colors are and get a set or two. Be sure the color for the numbers and the rest of the die highly contrast.

If he wants to run the game, the three best books are Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master, Game Master’s Handbook of Proactive Roleplaying, or the new 2024 DMG.

I think it's a little early to say "most" players are switching to 5.5. Keep in mind that's another $50-150.

I didn't get the age of your nephew, but maybe some of those lore books and novels for young readers?
My nephew is age 10. He wanted to play since he was 8, but his parents wanted him to wait until he turned 10.

He has two sets of blue dice light blue and dark blue.

He likes 2014 edition since he is most familiar.

I would say either a player's handbook (either 14 or 24) or a starter/essentials kit so he has core rules stuff he can build off of. Most all of them are inspirational and fun for him to explore as he gets started with the hobby.

I was going to say the same thing. He'll easily adapt to the 2024 ruleset, it's not that much different. I see no real reason to buy the 2014 books when his friends will likely get the latest version of the books.

what sort of gift should I give him?
You have already given him the greatest gift: your time and a love for D&D and RPGs. (y)

Otherwise, ask him? Maybe there is something he would like?

If not, a custom mini from HeroForge or something representing his character might be cool -- especially if you design it with him.

I am the Dungeon Master for my family when we play Dungeons and Dragons. My nephew has been playing since summer of this year in 2024 and he loves the game. Whenever I am at his house he asks if he can play the game.

Besides dice and miniatures what sort of gift should I give him? He recently asked for the Dragonspire Peak Starter set.
Something not yet suggested is a chessex battlemat. Go to an office supply story & get a poster tube thing to store it in so he can carry it to a friend's house on his bike or whatever.

Thanks. I am sort of a forever DM. If I ever get the chance I would be a variant human Artificer Battle Snith.
