Chessex offers factory second mats. I've bought a few over the years, I have the one linked below, as well as the 4' x 8' I bought from them around 2010. I don't remember shipping being too expensive. I owned the small one (23" x 26") and it was just too small, so I would recommend something at least the next size up. These mats are virtually indestructible, so I'm not sure that a poster tube would even be needed, just a good sturdy rubber band or two would keep it wrapped up for travel.Something not yet suggested is a chessex battlemat. Go to an office supply story & get a poster tube thing to store it in so he can carry it to a friend's house on his bike or whatever.
Thank you. That is very helpful.Chessex offers factory second mats. I've bought a few over the years, I have the one linked below, as well as the 4' x 8' I bought from them around 2010. Chessex Megamat
I used to have the megamat for years & years before switching over to a tabletop display & definitely agree on recommending the bigger size. I got the impression that the nephew is younger & could be wrong, a good poster tube (go with a screw cap one like this) will keep it from being bent folded or catching on stuff while being carried from home to wherever the game is being run (ie friend's house) on top of keeping it from getting squished under stuffChessex offers factory second mats. I got that and a set of starter minis for my daughter a couple years ago.Something not yet suggested is a chessex battlemat. Go to an office supply story & get a poster tube thing to store it in so he can carry it to a friend's house on his bike or whatever.
Those tubes actually look pretty nice. Nothing I would use because I rarely if ever play anywhere else but my house now and on the off chance that I do I just throw it in the car. Would be nice for a youngster on the go though.a good poster tube (go with a screw cap one like this) will keep it from being bent folded or catching on stuff while being carried from home to wherever the game is being run (ie friend's house) on top of keeping it from getting squished under stuff
Think I bought two over the years and I have never noticed any differences from the more expensive ones. Even if it was missing a few squares at half the price, who cares.Thank you. That is very helpful.
To clarify:I'd go with Dragonspire Island (or whatever that is) and a PHB.
Thank you, I was thinking of Dragons of Stormwreck Isle and horribly mangled it.To clarify:
The Essentials Kit starter set comes with the Dragon of Icespire Peak adventure.
Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is a separate (and newer) starter set.
