My next project (#4)!

ergo:

Trip (Ex): A THING that hits with its tail slam attack can attempt to trip the opponent (+21 check modifier) as a free action without making a touch attack or provoking an attack of opportunity. If the attempt fails, the opponent cannot react to trip the THING. A THING cannot make a trip attack in any round that it has used its tail as part of a snatch maneuver.

OK, here is the bonespew ability, split up a little to make it easier to look at. The first paragraph describes what happens when the creature uses it, and the second paragraph describes what happens when you get hit. As I said, it is similar to a web attack for the second paragraph, but since web attacks are made in the same way as net attacks (which affect single targets on a ranged attack roll), the first paragraph shows that it instead targets all creatures in a spread, allowing them to dodge with a Reflex save. The third paragraph describes the limitations of the spew and how to replenish it. I'm wondering if that third paragraph should become a separate ability and/or become flavor text.

Bonespew (Ex): A THING can spit out a paste made of stomach excretions and ground bone. This breath weapon targets all creatures within a 15-foot diameter, at a range of up to 60 feet. Targets of this pasty spew must make a DC 17 Reflex save or else be immobilized.

Once struck by the Bonespew attack, the target can attempt to break free as a full round action by succeeding at a Strength check against DC 18, or an Escape Artist check against DC 21. The spew-covered victim can also be broken free of the hardened spit; in this case the bonespew has a hardness of 7 and 15 hit points.

THINGs can project bonespew three times before emptying their throat-sack. Each Medium-sized skeleton they devour replenishes one use of the Bonespew attack. Consuming a Medium-sized skeleton takes one round, while digestion of a consumed skeleton takes 5 minutes before it can be used in a Bonespew attack. With access to a fresh supply of skeletons, a THING can use its Bonespew attack indefinitely, pausing only to consume and digest more ammunition.

Ideas... the reference to "breath weapon" needs to go away for sure.

Borrowing the language from the aranea for paragraph 2:
An entangled creature can escape with a DC 17 Escape Artist check or break free with a DC 21 Strength check. Both are standard actions. The check DCs are Constitution-based, and the Strength check DC includes a +4 racial bonus. Hardened bonespew has 15 hit points and hardness 7.

"A paladin of 9th level or higher can select a sea tiger as his special mount. Apply a -4 adjustment to the paladin's level for purposes of determining the mount's characteristics and special abilities." - directly from the MM3.

Bonespew - should the area be a cone, or is there a reasom for it being a circle/sphere?

Regarding the trip attack - quadrupeds only get the +4 bonus to resist being tripped, but not to trip someone else.

I agree that a cone of bonespew is a better idea.

And you're right about the trip bonus. I thought it was defender only, but I didn't see it when I checked my PHB.

Demiurge out.

so, +17 for the trip then.

for the bonespew, we are getting closer and closer. here are the first two paragraphs:

Bonespew (Ex): A THING can spit out a 60-foot cone of paste once per round. Creatures within the cone must succeed on a DC 17 Reflex save or the paste anchors them in place, allowing no movement. The save DC is Constitution-based.

An entangled creature can escape with a DC 17 Escape Artist check or break free with a DC 21 Strength check. Both are standard actions. The check DCs are Constitution-based, and the Strength check DC includes a +4 racial bonus. Hardened bonespew has 15 hit points and hardness 7.

is this stated a little better? :)

A THING can project its bonespew three times before emptying its throat-sac. Bonespew is made of stomach excretions and ground bone, and a THING must devour full skeletons to replenish its supply. It takes full round for a THING to consume a Medium skeleton. It takes 5 minutes to digest this bone material, and a Medium skeleton provides enough material to replenish one use of its bonespew attack. A THING can use its bonespew attack indefinitely, though it can only hold enough material for three uses at once.

The indefinitely/ three uses at once dichotomy seems a bit odd. Perhaps you should put "a THING can use its bonespew attack three times before needing to replenish its supply of bones" in the ability's text, and what bonespew is and how a THING replenishes it in the flavor text.

Demiurge out.

eh?
