My player wants an enchanter

Yeah, it will be difficult in the rules as given so far. The main point being that the character wants to do the illusory non-direct-damage spells.. and, well, most of those types of spells are now utility spells and the primary powers gained most often are the direct damage type or hinderance/condition type.

Having said that, stock up on condition-delivering spells.. it won't be exactly the same but closest to what he/she wants (though, I will voice my thought that the least tweaking will be involved with going with a fey pact warlock; maybe multiclassed to wizard to pick up some condition spells)

I'm really, really hoping WotC breaks this mold for psion and illusionist. This is a pretty big issue with the PHB classes, IMO. Not EVERY ability for EVERY class needs to be about kicking a monster in the junk.

Given its focus, i have doubts that it will ever do a classic enchanter much justice. Enchanter powers require so much adjucation from the DM and have such a wide breadth of utility.

But this just means that the game is not well suited to create certain archetypes which is going to be an issue with most any system.
Well, maybe, maybe not. WotC has managed to surprise me on quite a number of occasions, and they have a great group working on 4e. I'll wait and see.

You could possibly do it with powers that beef up social skills, and use those in battle then.

2/3 of one of my group's 3E characters can't be made so far in 4E, mainly due to the lack of enchantments, so switching is no option for us anyway.
