My players are not working as a team

Greetings,

Does anyone have any tips on how to get your players to work as a team, presently they are not and it makes it very difficult for me as DM not to just flatten them with the encounters that I set for them.

Thanks

When my players don't work together, or don't keep their eyes on the ball, THEY DIE! And then, a few weeks later, THEY DIE AGAIN! Not to seem like I'm advocating TPKs, but sometimes they need to learn a lesson. Never really try to kill them, just allow them to be stupid. You can even do it with an encounter they should have no trouble with. That way when the bitch, just point out how the encounter level was two lower than the average they face.

I'm assuming you've already talked to them, or warned them a bit. I know, I know, it never really seems to help. Smacking them down with a kobold is always another nice trick. Once they realize that you're not there just to roll up their treasure they'll take you more seriously.

I've got 7 players, and out of those seven, three of them have died stupid deaths (more than once) which could have been avoided had they worked as a team

I used to have one player who would never think things through. He pulled the party into 2 TPKs that I can remember, but it might have been more. Eventually they stopped following him when he did stupid things. He kept doing them, and dying. Eventually he got tired of getting killed off and he started to take their advice. The dumber they are, the more they fall.

You do an injustice to your players who think about things and try different strategies if you cater to the idiots. If I'm going to lose anybody from my group out of frustration, it's going to be the guy who never retreats, with any character, and who plays every character like a fighter with a 6 int.

I've had some players like that :)

What I think I will do is talk to them again tonight and give them a final warning, if they don't listen to me...

Not recommended. Maybe put someone else in the hot chair tonight, and be a player for once. You'll learn something, and so will the guy in the hot chair. Be the example, and be good at it.

If that's really not possible (you've got a big head, or the players are cowards or idiots, I've seen both), and the chair can't be switched off... you can try the usual talking.

Just don't make it an ultimatum. Tell them your opinion, then back off and play. the, Final Warning is bad. Final Warning or what? You quit DMing? I don't think they will like that
.

I hear what you are saying creamstreak, and I have been planning to do that (play instead of DM).

We bought RttToEE and I told my group that I was not going to DM it because: 1. There are other DM's in the group and 2. I would rather play it, What we are going to do is alternate between the campaigns playing them in (chapters), my plan is to try and get the group playing as a team (leadership by example) in RttToEE and hopefully they start playing that when I DM my campaign.

I just want the game to go smoothly now instaed of having towait and ""Train my Players""

It might help if you realize that not everyone is a "natural role player"... not to mention that some people are "to good" at roleplaying. (What do I mean by this? Simply that some people are not willing to put their 2nd lvl char on the line to die in the face of an adult red or worse...I know I don't want to reroll my char every friggin week!!)
We have someone in our group who apparently doesn't care though, and is always dragging us into trouble...I grew tired as a player of his crap...and just sat there when he got into trouble and died...let him remake a char!
As a DM, well running an npc that is very active 'when necessary', could help direct your other players in situations when they seem to be faultering or simply not working together...kind of a rally the troups kind of char. If none of these ideas work, jump ship if their not interested in the game enough to work with you as their DM, especially after the amount of work you have to put into it! There are always other people out ther willing to play the game and play it right!...Paladinwife

I do not care whether my players work together or not, as long as they do not work against each other and harm the game. I do not want to force them into becoming a well-oiled killing machine optimized to crush encounters, but to have fun roleplaying. If that means less than ideal battle or other plans, so what? I can adjust. Nowhere is it written that the opposition has to act a certain way.

Remember, it is a roleplaying game, not chainmail. No one should need to become a master tactician if he just wants to play a carefree rogue. As long as everyone has fun, why bother changing it?

Well said Fenes:D ...Jolly good show...where is it written that your char should choose to fight every encounter you put in front of them, and what will you do if you draw up a whole campaign and not a single player has any interest whatsoever??:D ...Paladinwife
