My psionics house rules for the XPH

Let me take the thread off onto a slightly different track. I like the Soulknife's ability to enhance his mindblade with special abilities, but I think the range of options given is a little narrow. So, I'm going to allow a Soulknife who has taken the Aligned Attack feat to enhance his mindblade with the relevant alignment special ability (Anarchic, Axiomatic, Holy or Unholy) at the cost of a +2 enhancement bonus, and one who has taken the Ghost Attack feat to enhance his mindblade with the Ghost Touch special ability at the cost of a +1 enhancement bonus.

And I'm also going to work on a Paladin/Soulknife PrC who can create a Holy Avenger mindblade.

That seems reasonable. I would generally allow a soulknife to research "standard" weapon enhancements, at roughly the same cost as spell research.

I'm looking forward to seeing that paladin PrC; I think there could be some very cool soulknife PrCs merging them with other classes. Can you imagine a druid/soulknife prestige class, with a wildshaped bear throwing mindblades? :)

Mindclaws! Cool!

I'm working on a Feat tree that would grant some of the Soul Knife's powers, so that I can do away with that icky core class once and for all. There would be a PrC that allowed one to further hone his mind knife.

The first Feat would be something like...

Mindknife [Psionic]
Benefit: While psychically focused, you can manifest a dagger of pure mental force as a move action. It counts as a magic weapon for overcoming damage reduction. It disapates immediately upon leaving your grasp (if you are disarmed, for example, or loose it as a free action to use your hand for something else), but you can re-form it as a move action.

The new Dominate seems too much like the old Control Body, which is similar to the new Control Body, which is also 4th level and requires concentration. I'm inclined toward PKitty's domination rule.

I'm also inclined to give psions the psicrystal feat for free. That or I could consider removing all familiars from wizards and sorcerers and requiring a feat for them.

From what I figure, it's more like "making familiar a feat and giving sor/wiz an extra feat at level 1 to make up for it." Psions do get a bonus feat at level 1, after all.

So do Wizards: Scribe Scroll. Not that I'm overly committed to this one. Maybe psions should get Encode Stone and the Psicrystal?

I'm in the keep house rules as simple as possible camp, too.

Hey Dinkeldog, is the email you have listed here correct? I tried sending you an email a couple of weeks ago... My Sunday D&D group may be looking to add another player.

Hey KC. I responded back through my school e-mail, so you should be getting it any time in the next 3 months or so.

Anyway, Sunday's my normal group right now, and I'm working Sunday evenings, so not really available.

On topic, though, another house rule we talked about yesterday at our regular group session was keeping the Mindscapes.

What are you folks changing?

I'll probably not allow psionics. The system is not balanced in the slightest with the PHB stuff (see my post about psions in the rules forum for details).

Would still need some major work to tone it down and put it in line.

About your changes...

1.) Do you disallow Psionatrix as an item then?

2.) Yeah, I wondered about that, too. Dominate is one power, which I really expect to be better (a bit, like being 4th instead of 5th) than the arcane equivalent. That one - even tho it makes the psion even stronger ;) - makes sense.

Some powers that need to be house ruled IMHO:

- Dispel Psionics (Allows +20 dispels at 10th character level. :p)
- Schism (Yeah, right! This is 3.5 not 3.0 - no two powers per round. ;))
