Last night was a good one. We carefully entered the Den of Evil with Francisco and Jimmy (the two with the highest stealth bonuses) lead a recognizance into the mouth of the den. They spotted a few Kobolds in the well lit tunnels. The lighting was such that it would have been difficult if not impossible to explore any deeper without being seen so they decided to come out of hiding to launch a couple of attacks on them before they had a chance to react. Jimmy let out the bird man cry to let us know that they had engaged the enemy, and the rest of us came rushing in. Even though I had spoken with Jimmy about the plan to enter upon his bird call I had become so mesmerized at the sight of a red winged bird of paradise that the sound of a bird call did not immediately register with me, and I took a moment to catch up with the pack. By the time I got inside they had already dropped a large number of foes, and I could see a pool of ice on the floor which I could only pray had come from Patticus. I entered the fray by taking out the closest foe and attempting to go into hiding and failed miserably as I did so in an open and well lit area. We spent a few more moment dispatching more weak kobolds and a very few number of slightly stronger ones. Just when we started to relax and think this was the easiest 200 gold we could ever make a large ogre entered our vision from a back corridor. Pat slowed the beast’s advance with one of the many spells in his arsenal, the ever impatient Jude decided to charge in and meat the slow moving creature where it stood. As the combat with this creature started both Tercel and Francischops showed real heart and attacked faster and with more ferocity then I had previously seen either of them display. When this creature still stood tall I realized he was no ordinary foe and launched a spell in his direction which the monster easily avoided. This left me rather afraid so I moved to the side and attempted to hide. When I went over to the wall however I stumbled miserably and upon realizing how vulnerable I was I unleashed all the power I had remaining in me, which he again was easily able to avoid even with my warlocks curse upon him. A cleric came in from another direction, but still to the front of our party, who unleashed a vicious fire breath scorching Jude, Brian and myself. Two other large Kobolds entered from the same direction the cleric came from and engaged our forward members. Francisco launched another attack and slipped into the shadows to return later with some surprise attacks. I called upon the most powerful spell in my arsenal at this point and was finally able to hit home on the ogre and managed to instill images of doom deep within his mind forcing to retreat slightly from whatever it is that gives him nightmares. While this attack had witch fire spew from his eyes, mouth and hands this seemed to be more for show then for go as it seemed to do little actual damage, and he quickly re entered the battle. His initial flee was enough to give Jude an attack of opportunity on him, and could have done the same later as the nightmares continued to come back into his mind, but we were not able to capitalize on his other retreats. Jude and Brian took the brunt of the damage, with fransico failing miserably on his ranged attacks and managing to hit Jude twice which lead to Tercel using up all of his healing powers to keep our front line in the fight. While the two of them were both on their second wind or by some accounts their third or fourth, the two kobolds were both still standing and managed to get me into a flanked position. I was able to get out of a flanked formation, but they used their dragoon tactics to follow behind me. The one who kept adjacent to me looked the closest to death so I decided to concentrate on him. I have no real melee prowess and decided to use a ranged spell, and simply hope in his weakened state he would miss any attempt to hit me as I cast eyebite on him which simply was not the case. He struck a clean blow upon my chest which left me just barley able to stand, but I was still able to get off my casting and landed a hit strong enough to knock him from his footing, as well as leaving me invisible to his eyes. I thought this was a good position to be in with the closest foe to me unable to attack without both me and Francisco having an opportunity to attack him as he rises, and with a curse on all but the priest I suspected I would soon be able to misty step out of harms way. This was not to be the case however as the Kobold who still had his footing launched a desperate strike at Brian knocking him unconscious. At this time the ogre who was engaged with him turned towards me as the next closest target and managed to knock me out as well. I awoke later to hear that Brian had been able to rise himself up and do his part in dispatching the remaining foes. We came across a number of treasures in the Den, most of which previously belonged to the villagers, but would now be able to aid us in our path. On the Ogre I found the finest suit of chain mail I have ever seen, which will surely prove to be a life saver to one of our fighters, but is also an item I debated keeping it’s abilities to myself in hopes of keeping it for myself.
