My Weird Cat

My house cat is kind of weird. When I sing to myself she'll just come along and curl up right next to me or curl up in my lap. Now, she only does this when I sing to myself. I'm not sure why, but it could be as simple as she just likes my voice. I've never had a cat do that at all before either.

Cats (and dogs) are like people - they are individuals, and they each have their own behaviors, likes, and dislikes. They aren't nearly as uniform as one might think.

There are a few plausible ways for your cat to have gotten trained into this behavior. For example, you mention that the cat will curl up next to you or on you - that implies you are sitting. Your cat may have identified that when you sing, you're sitting and intend to be there a while. Basically, you're telling kitty, "Hey, the warm bed's here!"

There are other explanations, and among them is, "She just does." :)

when I practice my guitar in my guitar room, my dog will come in, and lay down, usually right behind my feet if I'm standing.

She's a 13 year old chow. She's not a snuggler or clinger, she'd just as soon nap in another room as nap in the same room I'm in.

And I'm usually playing with distortion, not horribly loud. I'm not an awesome player.

But she either likes it, or likes hanging out with me while I'm noodling away.

My dogs like my guitar playing too! Especially if I'm grabbing an acoustic to go out into the yard to play.

I had a cat when I was a kid who was VERY musical. She'd slowly sneak onto my lap while I was practicing cello and then work her way around to my right knee, where she would either pluck at the strings with her paw or nip at them with her teeth (which, btw, produced a "reverb"/sitar type effect).

She also occasionally accompanied herself on my Mom's piano. The first time she did this, it was 3AM. We all heard this wailing noise and someone playing the piano atonally. We popped out of our respective rooms, instantly realizing that it wasn't any of us- so my Dad crept around the corner into the living room...and started laughing. There she was, walking up and down the keyboard, yowling away happily!

when she was younger, she liked the Spice Girls. When my wife would pop a CD in, she'd get all prancy and happy. No she's got a heat condition, so we try to keep her calm.

And yes, I've heard "Cat Plays Piano" at 3am in the morning. Definitely an experience, especially if you aren't far away from the piano.

I like this thread. Made me "d'awww" a couple of times. Cute stuff.

Our cat likes to talk to people. She looks at you and meows, and if you meow to her she'll meow back again, and if you keep at this for a while so she's socialized enough she'll start purring.

Our musical cat had several interesting habits.

One was that she wandered around the house grousing like a little old man. She'd wander by, going "mrf grf mrf grf eh rmf"...it was like having a 13lb furry mechanic meandering through our daily lives, frustrated about a bolt she couldn't loosen. She was also quite the huntress, though, because she was a housecat, meant she only got whatever got into the house.

Her brother, though...he was the wussy pussy. He used to run away when we entered the house...for the first 10 years of his life. Once a month, he'd attack the side of the fish tank with a 15 second "drum solo" attack and wander off. I once watched him watch a cricket walk straight towards him, pass within an inch of his paws, and after it had passed by and gotten 5' away from him, he flopped over and swatted a single lazy paw at it 3 or 4 times...and then he looked at me as if stunned that it got away.

The only thing he could hunt was Tender Vittles. THOSE turned him into the furry equivalent of Ethan Hunt. We had to lock them up- He'd open cabinets with bars on them, open the box, then fish out a single bag and shred it open. Many an aluminum corpse was found in the middle of the kitchen.

A college buddy of mine dated a girl whose cat had a unique talent.

She found out about it because one day she was regaled by questions about why her outgoing message was "Meow, meow, meow, meow...."- everyone thought it was cute but odd. Thinking that the cat had accidentally pressed the button and recorded itself, she went home and recorded a new, standard message.

Later that evening, as she and my buddy were watching TV, the cat jumped up on her desk, went to the machine, bent over the microphone and pressed the record button..."Meow, meow, meow, meow..."

It seems the cat liked the sound of its voice, and learned from watching her (and, presumably, trial and error) which button to press. That way, when everyone was gone and the phone rang, the person on the phone AND the cat heard the meowing message!
