Mystic Theurge - What do I need to know?

Also, be careful how long it takes you aas a player to pcik your spells for the advnture. With both cleric and wixzard spells the other players and DM can really get impatient if it takes you a long time to settle opn the spells you are going to prepare.

@wilder_jw: A MT's familiar should generally have more hps than a wizard's.

Our barbarian/sorcerer/dragon disciple has a familiar (with just one sorcerer level), that has more hit points than some PCs... ;)

I've played a Wiz/Cle MT through to 12th level so far, and I have a few tips:
  • Spectral Hand + Touch Spells (clerics get great touch spells)
  • Divine Vigor to use up turn attempts and give a HP buffer
  • Practised Spellcaster x2
  • Use cleric slots for healing or touch spells and wizard slots for utility/buffing

I'm currently playing a drd-3/wiz-3/mt-2 and I have to agree that he excels at flexibility. The druid spells provide some significant options that a cleric wouldn't have. For example, summon nature's ally spells are almost always preferable to summon monster (expecially with Augment Summoning). I've also taken Practiced Spellcaster (wizard) and plan to take it again at 9th level.

The problem is lack of punch. The character can do a lot in a fight, but rarely has a spell that takes out the bad guys in one shot (though glitterdust sometimes does the job).

Any suggestions?

Have your character entangle, while party archers waylay hindered is quite effective.
A round or two like that could be quite effective in winnowing out some foes in the mid-levels.

A nice spectral hand delivering touch spells against an entangled foe also works.

Also don't forget the usefuleness of summon swarm ...it saved my barbarian/druid's ass and the entire party once. That's a good spell to leave to the druid list, while focusing elsewhere for the arcane side.
