Mystic Theurge

HERE's the epic progression for the Mystic Theurge.

It's in some web-enhancement or the DMG or I don't know where, but it is the official one there. :)

Anyone who thinks the mystic theurge is overpowered hasn't played one. Being behind three levels of spellcasting ability is major.

I play a 3/3/8 mystic theurge -- a 14th level character -- and I only have sixth-level spells. For that matter, as a 15th-level character I will still only have 6th-level spells. While a straight wizard has moved past limited wish into eighth-level spells like prismatic wall, I'll still be casting disintegrate. While a straight cleric has moved past resurrection into eight-level spells like earthquake, I'll still be casting heal.

The schticks of the mystic theurge are "breadth" and "stamina," not "power." My PC nearly always has something he can do to help the group, but he'll never manage anything truly impressive for our level. The true currency of power in D&D is "number of actions," and no matter how many spells a mystic theurge has, he only gets one action per round. For that one action, his choices are much less powerful -- albeit much more numerous -- than a dedicated spellcaster.
Yes I agree with you, that's what I told to my friends even if I understand some facts, I converted a 2nd edition cleric/wiz which was 9/17, if I had to follow the rules my character would be 2/17 (or a combination of that), in fact around 19 lvl but to keep that very old character in line with her story and events which happened I decided to convert to Mystic Theurge: cleric 3/ wizard 11 / MT 6; a 20 lvl character!!
For the DM of the future scenario he think that my "power ecl" is more around 22 than 20, difficult to say, I am not epic but I can cast 9th lvl wizard spells and 5th lvl cleric spells maybe in the same round with Quicken.

I don't think it's from the DMG, is it? Can anyone confrim that as IAAFMBATM? Anybody know the real source?

Ah, I suspected as much. So Epic MTs do get to advance both classes, and the write-up on the web site is wrong.

I think you made a false reading, both classes advance but alternatively, odd level = +1 arcane, even level = +1 divine. ;)

According to the ELH, spellcasting progression continues at the same rate as before, ie 1 per level for both divine and arcane.

You mean the bit under the sentence that starts "The following guidelines..."?

Guidelines can be overridden in specific cases by rules specific to a class.

No I didn't. I said that the write up is wrong, because random articles on the WotC web site cannot override the ELH.

Of course, as Hyp points out the stuff in the ELH is 'guidelines', which makes the question of which takes a little more tricky. But the article blatantly ignores the guidelines, for no immediately apparent reason, with the result of rendering the Epic MT utterly pointless. If it ever comes up IMC I'll be sticking with the guidelines and ignoring the web site.

They had a very good reason for the change, because a simultaneous progression would be way overpowered at epic levels.

That being said, I still think it's a bit too harsh what they made of it, especially with the slow bonus feat progression.
