Mystic Thurge - Is it broken?

So you have one level of cleric, one fighter and some wizard levels? Your DM shouldn't be afraid, you won't overpower anyone as spellcaster.

Simply list all your spells per day as you would have them with MT levels for level 10, 15 and 20, then compare them to the spells/day of a singleclass caster.

You won't have many more.

Additionally, your fighting abilities with the Spiked chain will get worse and worse with the MT levels... another point that weakens the char.

Your versatility is fine, but it'll start to hurt you soon powerwise. Not that I think it's a bad thing... I enjoyed playing chars with an overall usefulness instead of being in the spotlight 5 minutes per evening.

If you change the requirement to 'can cast 3rd level arcane & divine spells' it's perfectly well-balanced IMO - you get increased flexibility in return for giving up power. If you want the class for roleplay rather than powergamer reasons, suggest that to your GM.

S'mon, that character would be far to weak to participate in anything but a complete non-combatant game.

2½ spell levels behind, far smaller chance to penetrate SR... it isn't a character anyone should try to play in a standard DnD game.

Right, the MT is weak enough (put on flame proof suit).

so, a question, then, about the ol MT...

could the familiar of an MT, 3wiz/3clr/?MT for the sake of argument, deliver DIVINE spells via touch attack?

and the follow-up... therefore with Impr. Familiar, an MT with an eyeball beholder-kin (i know, i know, only in FR!) could ALSO fire all of his divine touch spells from 35 ft away??

sounds nice... :D

For the DMs who think MyTh is broken....have they actually tried to build one?

I have, for two different NPCs in my game. Think about it: as DM I can pull all of the uber-munchkin tricks in the book to tweak these characters out.

Bottom line: they were still weaker that Ozzy Osborne on prozac.

"Oooo. Look at all of the 2nd level spells this 11th level NPC can cast. Wow......the 5th level PCs could take 'im in 3 rounds......"

Let it go, guys: Mystic Theurge isn't broken.

Yep.

One of many reasons I don't play FR.........

:D

Spellsinger (KoK class) 3/ Cleric 3/ MT.

Casts all spells in full plate mail. Make him an elf, put him on a horse and play knight!

Shouldn't an 11th level NPC be able to cast 4th level spells? clr3/wiz3/myt5 means caster level of 8 for both cleric and wizard spells, heck even a clr5/wiz6 can cast 3rd level spells...

I still think the balance is there, while theurges have a lot of options with spells, overall they can't really spread their wings in either specialty.

Above I meant that a single-classed wizard could afford to become a 10th level Red Wizard, 5th level Archmage - a 25th level caster with both Spell Penetration and Greater Spell Penetration would have +29 on his rolls to defeat SR (A great wyrm red dragon has a SR of 32 (and a CR of 26)). Even a 10th level Mystic Theurge, 4th level Archmage can't compare. His caster level could be 21 for wizard spells (assuming spell power 4 times, the red wizard got to use all his archmage levels for cool abilities) which means with both penetration feats he has a +25 on his rolls to defeat SR as a wizard. As a cleric he is a 13th level caster, meaning 7th level spells and merely a +17 to defeat SR. Which one would you give better odds against the dragon (not that either would have too much of a chance, but I can see the Red Wizard/Archmage succeeding)?
