Mystical Thurge

The biggest thing about Mystic Theurge is, that while you get a *ton* of spells, you're behind the power curve, compared to a single-classed wizard or cleric of your same level.

For example, assuming you enter Mystic Theurge as soon as possible (Wiz 3 / Clr 3 / MT 1), as a 7th level PC (MT 2), you'll just be getting your 3rd level spells. OTOH, if you'd stayed as a "straight" wizard or cleric, you'd be getting 4th level spells when you made 7th level.

Most MT builds I've seen use the Practiced Spellcaster feat (often taken twice, once for each of the two original classes)...while this doesn't let you get the higher-level spells any faster, at least it does make sure that the "power level" of the spells you *can* cast is maxed out.

Any one got any strategies for a mystical thurge that is half clerick and half wizard?
(any lvl is fine)
I looked at that a while ago. I seem to remember coming to the conclusion that it's better to do an offset (i.e. 3 cleric/7 wizard/10 MT or 3 wizard/7 cleric/10 MT) than to split the cleric and wizard levels half and half. That way you actually reach 9th level spells in one of your spellcasting abilities. Which one depends on whether you want a more arcane or divine intensive character.

Also, pay attention to which domains you pick as a cleric; you don't want to duplicate too many spells that you can acquire as a wizard. Go for domains that give you access to spells you won't get as either a cleric or a wizard.

I'd highly recommend some crafting feats since being able to cast both divine and arcane magic will open up a lot more possibilities to create wondrous items, rods, staves, wands, potions, etc. CLW wands, for example, are almost always useful.

A wizard wheeze with Mystic Theurge is not Wizard / Cleric / Mysic Theurge but Wizard / Fighter / Divine Crusader / Mystic Theurge.

I think as long as you are not thinking of making a burn their face off/rend the earth battlecaster, the theurge is incredible. As a healer/buffer/utility caster, he is unparalleled IMO.

A spellcaster that is a MT is excellent if they are not an offense caster. If they are an offensive caster then they need to make sure they pick their spells appropriately so that they can be powerful, because they will be at least one spell level behind.

If you aren't an offense caster that often, then I think it is fine to go cleric 3 / wizard 7 / MT 10 (or cleric 7 / wizard 3 / MT 10). I also think it is fine to go cleric 5 / wiz 5 / MT 10, too.

One other thing to remember if you plan on going epic: MTs do not increase both caster levels as an epic caster (assuming I am remembering correctly). So even by epic levels you'll likely have to choose one class to progress with and leave the other alone. For this reason I would try to have your cleric part be healer/buffer/summoner/etc and if you have to be an offensive guru let your wizard do that. But it could work the other way, too.

With so many spells, buffing your entire party might be an effective option.

Practised spellcaster is a must. Also, Deathknell, a prayer bead of karma, and/or a shared orange ioun stone could increase either of the your class levels when buffing before a crawl. Magic vestments and greater magic weapon are excellent choices for this, as is resistance/protection from energy and airwalk. A lesser rod of extend can be a good investment for a buffer.

Another option is to obtain a lot of undead minions (you max total is calculated separately for each class), possibly with the Desecrate spell.

A good way to make use of your now puny Turn Undead ability is the Divine Metamagic Feat. It lets you use turning attempts to spontaneously apply metamagic feats to spells. Great if you have like 10 turning attempts, but are 10th level and have almost no chance to turn anything that would be a challenge to you.

In fact, it may be good to go Sorcerer/Cleric, just so you can utilize a high CHA instead of int for 2 things (extra turning attempts)

Once you have completed Mystic Theurge, Geomancer (CD) is a good choice. It only progresses one spellcasting class each level, but you get two good saves, average BAB and Spell Versatility.
