N.E.W. Starship Construction Guide

Morrus okay, one thing that has confused me all along in NEW, and which I was hoping was clarified in this update but still hasn't been, is this - Is a higher or a lower Fuel Efficiency better?

Several places in both the whole playtest doc and in the updated starship chapter you say conflicting things. 1> That Fuel cost is multiplied by the Fuel Efficiency (Thus if the base fuel cost for a trip is 10 units, and your fuel efficiency is 1.4, the trip takes 14 units). 2> That the ships operational range is multiplied by the Fuel Efficiency (Thus, if a ships base range on a full fuel load is 100 parsecs, and it has a fuel efficiency of 1.4, it could travel 140 parsecs before running out of fuel).

So, could I please get an example? If my ship has 10 fuel units left, and my fuel efficiency is 1.5, Can I go 15 parsecs, or can I only go 6.67?

Thanks.

The former - higher is better.

I think I've solved it. My password manager was auto-filling my ENWorld password where it was asking for the KS backer PW, and so, it was bouncing me to the "No file for you!" page.
So... what's the kickstarter backer password? I joined the kickstarter about a week ago and I have no such thing that I'm aware of.

The password can be found in update 27 on the kickstarter campaign.

Question about buying components:
Is there any guidelines on when to use small, medium, large etc. components?
I'm trying to make a class 7 or 9 destroyer (the mourning wolf if anyone is backing that) and am a bit confused as to which components are suitable.
it might be in the updated file, I can't remember when I downloaded mine.

Lastly:
page 9
Determine final values, step 3
"Divide the total cargo units used by the base cargo space for the hull class and multiple the result by 100%."
I am assuming you meant multiply, but 100% of what? Do you mean "multiply the result by 100 to get the percentage"? Or to square the number as in "multiply the result by 100% of the result"?
I'm assuming the first. :)

Do you not receive the Kickstarter updates by email? They went out daily during the campaign, and one or two since. If not, they are also accessible online via the "Updates" tab on the Kickstarter campaign page itself.

Technically, as long as you have the space, any is suitable. The size categories are there to help determine what is approximately suitable, but if you want to mount a tiny gun on a giant ship, or somehow squeeze one enormous engine and nothing else onto a small one, that's technically fine. That said, I'd very much appreciate feedback as to whether this leads to extreme exploits.

That's right. The paragraph could be phrased better! LOAD is (cargo used/base cargo)*100 and is expressed as a percentage. So a Class IV ship with 90 CU of equipment, and a base of 160 CU from its class, has a LOAD of (90/60)*100=56%. That means its final tonnage is 25K + 56% of 15K, or 33,400 tons.

No, I'm all good: I've just downloaded the starship construction guide. I'm afraid I just skimmed over where the password was written in Update 27. Thanks.

I just uploaded an amended version fixing some errata and adding some extra equipment (cloaks, tractor beams, ECM, etc.)

Thank you!

Just as an exercise* to see if I could break it I looked at engines:
2x Narita-Guo Union LF-1 fusion reactor, 26 MCr, 40 cu, 53 power, 1.2 efficiency.
Would in every way beat
OmniDyne Lines EF-1 fusion reactor, 55 MCr, 84 Cu, 82 power, 1.2 efficiency.
Unless you create a system for how engines fuel efficiency somehow decreases by using multiple engines.
They are the comparable engine types from the large and enormous categories.
//edit The simplest way to deal with the fuel issues I guess would be to just divide FE by number of engines. So in my above example the 2 narita engines FE would be 0.6

*please don't view it as a criticism! I think N.E.W. Is awesome, this was a pure attempt to break the system.

Some components ate certainly better than others, just like in real life! I think that's OK. Maybe the better one is harder to get, or the PCs have to travel further to get it.
