Naerl’s Solar Trickery

Should it stay Evocation, or (back) to illusion?

Naerl’s Solar Trickery

”Still a little kobold is Naerl? Dragons blood counts for nothing does it? I shall show them.” Mused naerl, as he walked from the mages guild after they had turned him down, “Naerl’ll show them stinking mages.” Naerl took a stand on the podium in the town square and shouted at the top of his still squeaky voice.
”I SHALL EAT THE SUN!”
The townsfolk laughed at the little kobold, him eat the sun?
“Let’s see how well you laugh when yous start bumping into each other!” And with one invocation he swallowed the sun.

Naerl’s Solar Trickery
Illusion (Glamer)
Level: Wiz/Sor 9, Trickery 9
Components: V, S, M
Casting time: 1 standard action
Area: 1 mile radius centered on caster
Duration: 1 hour/level (D)
Saving throw: None
Spell resistance: No

This spell simulates any time of day or night spoken at the casting, a time need not be spoken just the position of the sun. Although it can eliminate the penalties of creatures with light blindness etc, it cannot allow a vampire or other highly sun sensitive creatures to exist. You may even set the moon phase and stars with this spell as well.

Material A dragons tooth weighing at least 1 pound
I've got to stat out Naerl one day, gotta.

With regard to the poll. I'd have to say its Illusion, evocation implies the effects are real and I have a hard time seeing even a 9th level spell literally changing the moon's phase, the sun's state and star's positions.

The spell seems a bit weak for a 9th level spell to me. Here are some of my thoughts on improving the spell. I think you should make the spell an emanation. I also think you should allow it to protect vampires or other highly sun sensitive creatures. I think it should dispel and suppress all light and darkness spells and effect of less than 9th level. It would also be nice if it suppressed natural light sources with in its area of effect. Alternately I think you could reduce the spell’s level to 7th or 8th level depending on whether or not it trumps normal light sources and spells with in its area. Here is a rewrite of the spell incorporating my suggestions. I don't know if this is still what you had in mind from the spell.

Naerl’s Solar Trickery
Evocation [Light, darkness]
Level: Wiz/Sor 9, Trickery 9
Components: V, S, M
Casting time: 1 standard action
Area: 1 mile radius emanation centered on caster
Duration: 1 hour/level (D)
Saving throw: None
Spell resistance: No

The caster may set any illumination level from full daylight to pitch black at the time of casting. This level of illumination replaces the normal level of illumination for the duration of the spell. This spell dispels and suppresses all light and darkness spells and effects of less than 9th level with in its area. It also suppresses natural light sources such as torches, fires, or even sunlight with in its area. If the illumination level is set to full daylight then the spell affects creatures as if it was actual sunlight.

Material: A dragons tooth weighing at least 1 pound

That is a very nice spell but i just makes it day or (pitch black night, not what I aimed to do. Still i reckon changing it back to illusion would work, as well.

A figment could not actually generate light or darkness. Figments are limited by existing light levels. A phantasm could convince affected creatures (which would be a limited number) that it was a particular light level, but that would be overly complicated.

I'd say definitely evocation.

Yes but by the same token an evocation can't create the moon and stars or move the sun or make images there of, its a spell that belongs in more than one school. I guess you could use an Illusion (Shadow) a quasi-real evocation may be capable of creating light and if there's no save there'd be no way to get into the partial effects iffiness.

Just my 2 cents.
