Name My Child

I hope you have a back-up name in case you have a girl. ;)

Maybe your fiancee would be less offended by Xavier if you came up with an "A" name that wasn't Alexander. Alexander Xavier is an awful lot of Xs and Rs. Perhaps Aidan ("fire"), Andrew ("manly"), Augustine ("exalted")? (Amazingly, I can find only three male names that start with X -- Xanthus, Xavier, and Xerxes.)

My wife and I went back and forth many times on our two children's names. Even if you agree to a name now there's no telling what will happen on the day the baby is born.

The advice of one of my friends: give a kid a normal first name and a "cool" middle name. Thus, their early life isn't scarred by having a "cool" first name, and when they grow up and want to have a "cool" name (say, in high school), it's waiting for them.

That said, Ryan Xavier is the perfect choice.

I like alexander xarvier because it will make his initials AXE - which incidently is the exact reason she's biased against it. I say - hey he'll be covered. No matter what he chooses to do in life he's got a name that fits it.

Alright, 'Axe' is a great nickname. Go with Alex Xavier. Of course, that means it'll be shortened to 'Alexavier', which in itself is not a bad name at all.

Ian. I'm partial to Ian.

But if it were to come down between you and your wife's suggestions, I prefer Ryan James.

You could, of course, listen to Johnny Cash's advice and name him Sue... Xander Xavier might be a nickname with similar consequences.:(

When my wife was pregnant with our third (and last) child. I was pretty insistent that he be named Isembard...

Luckily for the child he turned out to be a her - whom we named Molly :D

Do the French Canadian thing - multiple middle names.

I have met French Canadians with like 3 to 5 middle names. Just play with various combinations for a name combination that is catchy and rolls of the tongue.

It used to be traditional in Quebec for children to be given at least three names (plus the surname). The first name would be Joseph (or Marie if the child was a girl), the second name would be that of some relative (like a grandparent), and the third name would be what the child was actually called.

Just go with the easiest method. First, take a deep breath; second, yell each name at the top of your lungs. Any names that can't be said in one breath are gone. Then, you choose the name that makes you feel less mad.

This way, when the kid does something bad and you yell, you calm down before the punishment stage comes in. It lets you talk to the kid in a logical manner, and besides, then the name can be used at work when you're ready to use you paper clips and elastics to hit the guy two cubicles over that won't stop singing along to the ABBA songs they have on tape. :D

I wish to name hime Alexander Xavier, She wants to name him Ryan James.

My own son is named Alexander Xavier, but he didn't start that way.

Originaly I wanted to name him Xavier Alexander, but my ex-wife was sudden afraid that people would think we named him after Professor Xavier of the X-Men.

That being said, try Xavier Ryan. If he decides he wants a more mundane name his initials would still be X. Ryan which is sort of intriguing.

I knew a guy named after the character in Whinne the Pooh, Christopher Robin. He told me that while he disliked it when he was in middle school and high school, his attitude changed when he went to college.

The attitude adjustment came when the boys stopped making fun of it and the co-eds started thinking it was "cute." :D Now if he's out at a network event or something where he doesn't want someone to forget his name, he tells them the whole name and they remember him pretty well afterwords.
